    Old M1s

The CMP got several of the Haitian Garands on the last go around. They were disassembled for parts. There is a thread about the Haitian Garands on the CMP forum.

What rifle were you issued in basic training?

Ft Leonard Wood, 1990-91. Colt M16A1, no date marked. The butt and fore ends where worn to the point of being their natural green color. Rattled really badly.

    Accuracy WWII Rifles?

Your results will depend on the condition of each rifle and the ammo. Most militaries considered 2 MOA as good at the time. My Garand shoots about 2.5 with ball ammo, 1.75 with handloads. $500-800. M1 carbine about 3 MOA with ball ammo. $450-700. 1903 Mk1 will do about 2 MOA, 1.75 with...

    Which Would You Pick...

I have a 10FP that I shoot competitions with as well as deer hunt. I know they can be made to shoot well without a lot of work. I go the opposite of the others and vote for the 10FP. Someone once said only accurate rifles are interesting. A lot of ranges don't allow rapid fire. A...

Question about a Yugo 48 and Yugo 98 Mauser

The 48 is a Yugo made Mauser after WW2. They are robust and function well, but I would not expect any type of collector value. The VZ 24 that I looked a while back was well made. Had good craftsmanship. Probably will be more collectable than the Yugo. I don't know first hand, but I believe...

    Good Spotting Scope

Kowa's are very good. Leupolds are too. So are any of the German made scopes. I have a Burris spotting scope. They're not bad for the money.

    Time for a rifle

I have a Savage Mark II BV and love it. It needed some trigger work to get away from that lawyer trigger. If you haven't already, look at rimfirecentral.com. Yes, starting out on a .22lr is a very good move. Also, buy the best optics you can afford.

    M1 Carbine ?'s

Go to jouster.com and look at the CSP shooting pages. There is a carbine section and there is also a classified section. They usually have some reasonable prices on some good genuine US Gov't carbines. The "real" carbines were made by Inland, Winchester, Underwood, Standard Products...

    8mm Mauser availability

Yep, the Spanish is a small ring. Not originally designed for the higher pressures of modern cartridges. A good 8mm Mauser cartridge is the 196gr match ammo made by FNP of Portugal. It shot very well out of my 1944 K98k. It is good brass too. Still use it. If you handload, just get some...

Took a new rifle to the range today

Where is Union Grove, as in from Mobile? I'm about 10 miles north of Mobile. Anyway, I use the 165gr Sierra GameKing BTSP in my .308's with good effect. Never had any runaways. The 165 GameKings like Varget really well and also H4895 was a good performer. I know exactly what you mean about...

In need of rifle...went and looked around

Free floating is a Savage standard. The looseness on the rifle is probably the action screws not being tight. The action is pillar bedded. If all you want is a deer rifle, the standard Savage is going to be hard to beat. I suggest you go ahead and buy from a gun store. Small gun shops...

    Inherited yet another rifle

FN is Fabrique Nationale of Herstal, Belgium. A very highly regarded gun maker. They have built some of the best Mausers, the FN FAL, and a few US military weapons.

    In need of a rifle...

For around 1 grand, you can get a Savage 12BVSS combo. It has the rifle and scope with some accessories. Look at www.savagearms.com for them. I think .223 or .22-250 would be a good choice.

    which weatherby to buy?

The reason the Vanguard is so cheap is that they are not made by Weatherby. They are made by Howa of Japan. Howa makes good rifles. If I were wanting to buy a gun made by Howa, I'd buy a Howa not a Weatherby con.
