Garand out shot by my Kraut!

It is possible that your barrel is worn out. How does it look at the muzzle when you use a cartridge as a gage? A Garand can have an amazing amount of throat erosion and still shoot good if the muzzle looks good. I've built two Garands from parts, and some of the parts floating around...

    an old 98 sporter

How does it shoot? I picked up an Arisaka for $50 that someone had hacksawed off the stock and shortened the chamber to 300 Savage and it still shoots great. I've kept it as a loaner rifle that I could hand to someone w a box of ammo and say, "You can kill anything that you can see with this...

what was your first gun you bought not

Dad gave me my first gun at 14; but when I was 16 he saved my money from working for the summer like deskjockey, and I got a Savage 12ga pump... First gun purchased completely by myself was a VZ52 and transferred at a pawnshop. Very nice rifle.

    Reloading 308 questions

from over in snipercountry: "Gunsmiths generally use the Greenhill Formula to determine the optimal twist for a given bullet. The formula is T=150(d/r) for velocities from about 1500 to 2800 fps. Substitute 180 for the 150 value for velocities exceeding 2800 fps. "T" is the twist rate. "d" is...

    Synthetic M1 Garand stocks

I have a black ramline on mine. It's a good stock. I don't remember where I bought it. You will want to pick up another handguard clip for it.

    Is this a decent press?

Ditto with ojibweindian and Uncle Don and Dave.... For the price of the RCBS copy of the Lee "Challenger" press, (a lightweight aluminum O press) you can have the Lee copy of the Rockchucker (an unbreakable cast iron press). Great press.

    Norinco rifles

I have a Norinco M14S -and- a MAK90 -and- an SKS. Fit and finish is so-so, but they always go bang and accuracy is reasonable. My dad and I bought the SKS first because we were both a bit ervous about buying a commie gun but it worked so well and the commie ammo was so cheap that I picked...

Best way to start reloading .30-06

I also recommend Lee. Even if you buy their super strong Classic Cast press - that's only $65 and you save your money for components. The Lee RGB dies ($11) are also an excellent deal - BEST DECAPPER EVER. I used to break one RCBS decapping pin per 100rds, and once I got a Lee RGB die...

    Building an M1 Garand?

I've 'built' two Garands, and it's not hard technically: Anyone with some basic mechanical skill can do it. When I built the first one, it was from a centuryarms receiver on a complete parts kit through whatacountry, although I haven't seen any parts kits advertised lately. I ended up...

Stories of non serious gun accidents.

I was shooting golf balls with a buddy and he had a 22lr bullet bounce off the ball and hit him. Didn't hit hard enough to bleed, but it was amazing that it followed almost exactly the reverse trajectory.

    Most Underappreciated Rifle Caliber

250 Savage. Its the intermediate round that could have been the US version of the x39. 7.5 MAS. I have a MAS49/56 and with 7.5 MAS, It is the rifle that the M14 should have been.

    Speaking of headspacing surplus rifles

For cartridges that reference on the shoulder, like 30-06 or 8mm mauser, or 7.5mm Swiss, place one piece of masking tape on the base of an unfired 7.5 Swiss cartridge and see if it chambers. (It should). Place a second piece of masking tape on the base and it should be very difficult to...

Lottery Winnings... What would you do?

I don't have any interest in improving my fellow man through political action. They can go to hell in whatever manner they chose. I also wouldn't travel around the world. Most foreign countries I have no interest in at all: They are covered with smelly foreigners that don't speak English...

Guardia Civil Spanish Mauser - Cal. .308 Win

I have a small ring Spanish Mauser. Shot one and a half foot groups at 50 yards, so I slugged the barrel and found the barrel was cut large at .312, so I reloaded for it using bullets for the Russian 7.62x39. With bullets the proper size for the barrel, it is very, very accurate. If you...

    New...

Yeah, the Lee Loader is all the equipment you need - then just snare some primers, brass, powder and bullets and you are good to go. The Loader should have had starting loads in the instructions. Did your loader not come with instructions? If not, you might check the...
