It has to do with Newtons law. I think it makes no difference whether it 5" or 3.5", steel or aluminum except to the degree the recoil energy is lost to overcome inertia due to a dainty grip and or a limp wrist

there are free float hand guards that have rails or can attach all sorts of rails YHM comes to mind
they make rifles (and carbines) with standard clamp on handguards that shoot less than 4moa or (I know its hard to believe) even 1 moa !
