Did you give your eyes a chance to adjust to the lower light conditions before firing? I've fired a few different pistols, including a ported GP100, and several rifles at night. Didn't end up blind, but I did lose my night vision. I was taught to keep one eye closed when shooting at night.

After all that lurking...a topic I actually have some useful experience with!!! I spent too many years dealing with HP gas cylinders as a scuba instructor, lab tech etc.
I've got an old steel scuba tank in the garage I use as a long distance rifle target. A 30.06 will punch right through...
