7mm-08 Reduced Load - reality check

Thanks for the replies. ArchAngel, I actually started with the Hodgdon data. They recommend not going lower than 60% of max load. The max load for a 120g with H4895 is 43.7g, so the minimum charge would be 26.2g. The Youth load of 35.6g that they recommend is in between the min and max, at...

7mm-08 Reduced Load - reality check

I am wanting a reduced deer-hunting load for my 11 year old. He can handle the recoil of a 20 gauge, but I want the load to be mild enough that he will practice with it. Here is the recipe that I am considering: 120g Barnes TSX 32g H4895 goal: 2400 fps The TSX seems to have a good...

    Low Power variable Scopes

I recent close encounter with a Whitetail has me rethinking my scope selection. I currently have a variable scope that spends most of its time on 6x while hunting. I recently missed a "wing shot" on a running deer because the scope magnification was too high. By current scope is a 4-12X, but...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

My comments in Post #18 are incorrect. After thinking about it some more I realize that sight alignment precision would not need to be small compared to the size of the sight adjustments. Sorry for any confusion this generated.

    Sight Alignment Heresy

Sunray, I agree. But this is not how Marksmanship is currently being taught, and that is what I am attempting to change. The emphasis on the need to center the front sight in the aperture is universal in the sources (including Military training manuals) that I have looked at. Here is an...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

While discussing this topic on another forum, a member raised the question of why sight adjustments work if eye movement doesn't cause a shift in the Point of Aim. After some thought I gave the following reply, which I think adds another piece to the puzzle: "In thinking about your question...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

Red Tornado, Rapid fire is a primary application of this theory. When time counts you don't want to waste time doing something that isn't going to make any difference. During slow fire, there is time to dress up sight alignment if you want to, but during a long match this will contribute to...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

Vern, I agree with the first part of your statement, and mostly with the last part. I would state it slightly differently, though: "The eye can naturally center the front sight with enough accuracy so that no aiming error occurs." This emphasizes the finding of our paper that precision...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

Red Tornado, Parallax suppression acts equally in all directions. We only used lateral offsets in the camera test for convenience and brevity. In my life fire experiment I tested with an upward offset of the front sight and target and did not change the position of the group.

    Sight Alignment Heresy

I am re-posting the link to the paper that Doug and I wrote. The paper has been updated to include tests that use a camera to investigate the phenomenon. Doug performed all of the setup and testing, and the results conclusively demonstrate that the effect of parallax suppression is real. It...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

BigG, In low-light situations the pupil dilates, so the allowable size of the aperture while still suppressing parallax is increased. The size of the aperture defines a spot of light that falls on the pupil of the eye. As the eye moves around behind the aperture, the positioning of the the...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

Dr. Dickie, You are correct. There isn't really any difference in how target apertures and ghost rings are used. It just a matter of degree. The ghost ring has a very large field of view and allows for faster target acquisition when compared to a smaller aperture. The penalty is that it...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

I guess no one was in the mood to burn a heretic, or everybody thinks we were right ;), or maybe our explanation was too obscure. I offer the following simple experiment that can be done to observe the lack of error when aiming with aperture sights that are "misaligned": 1) Place a rifle...

    Sight Alignment Heresy

I have heard and read some version of the following statements many, many times: "To properly aim aperture sights the front sight post must be centered within the rear aperture." "If the front post is not centered within the aperture this indicates a sight misalignment and the Point of...
