Great Thread!
I'm in the process of making some nitrated paper cartridges for my .58 Cal. guns. I'm using Onionskin typing paper otherwise known as tracing paper. I'm currently awaiting delivery of my potasium nitrate. I made an aluminum dowell for forming the cartridges on one of the lathes...
As I recall that 2nd Model Dragoon cartridge conversion of Mojave gamblers involved using a reduced charge with filler with a round ball seated into the cartridge. The finished revolver looked similar to the full Kirst conversion complete with loading gate and ejector rod.
A fellow over at http://www.frontierspot.org/index.php?sid=f55d23f4782ac03edc4fcd22ad4fedd3 who goes by the moniker of Mojave Gambler has an online magazine called "The Hobby Gunsmith". A few months back he ran a series about converting a 2nd model Dragoon to .45 Colt. this was done by...
I buy mixed case lots of Goex from a guy who comes to our CAS club shoots a couple times a year. By mixed case lots I'm talking about FFg and FFFg. I use the Goex for most of my blackpowder shooting, Muzzleloaders and BP cartridges. I do buy Swiss for my reproduction Whitworth. The Swiss is an...
For removing those stubborn barrel wedges I use a rawhide mallot. Gato's right in that those chainfires mostly originate from the rear of the cylinder due to poorly fitted caps. I've never experienced a chainfire but I have had caps that flew completely off the nipples under recoil. Pinching...
A lot depends on the design of the firearm in question too. Most octagon barreled muzzleloading rifle barrels are pretty stout. I saw a repro Brown Bess musket on display at Rendevous a couple years ago. The barrel had come apart quite dramatically at the breech area. I was told that this was...
Howdy Mec:
I probably shoot my C&B revolvers and my other cowboy guns with black powder more than any of my more modern firearms. One thing that I neglected to mention when handloading blackpowder loads for the Remington revolvers, Make sure to use lots of soft lube in order to keep the...
Mec:
So far my impression of the Uberti revolvers has been generally good. My Uberti's are the 1875 Outlaws sold through EMF. While these pistols do have their faults and they aren't true to the original design overall they have been good shooters for me. All Remington revolvers that I've dealt...
Howdy Gunsmither, Josey, Mec:
That Patterson tool sounds like it was a cheap repro of an original, Had a cheap repro of an original style Colt nipple wrench break on me after very little use turned out that the danged thing was made out of potmetal. I do recall seeing Dixie selling a bench type...
One of these is definately on my to buy list. I've allready got 58 Remmies and 75's haven't branched off into the pocket models or the 1890's yet but6 eventually I plan on having at least one of all the cowboy era Remington repros. Howdy Josey, Fightin Creek Slim here.
Welcome to THR Alchimista:
You know me from the Cowboy Action Forums as Fightin Creek Slim. Always great to see another member of SCORRS here. I just bought another Pietta 58 Remington last month to add to my growing collection of Pietta's including 1851 Navies and 1860 Armies. I've been...
Try Cabela's for their stainless steel revolver nipples.
Cabela's Stainless revolver nipples
The factory nipples on many of the Italian revolvers leave a lot to be desired performance wise. they are usually the first thing that I replace.
