    Casting balls and bullets

When I was shooting PPC matches years ago I went through a lot of 38 special. Salvaged wheel weights worked fine for that. But muzzle loading rifles and handguns need the projectile to be soft. The bullet or ball needs to spread a bit and form into the rifling of the barrel for accurate...

    LEO Off duty carry

Off Duty guns; started LE back in the mid 70s so I have carried a few different ones First was a S&W Mod-66 .357 with a 2 & 1/2 inch barrel. Very high quality and accurate. Heavy and a pain to carry Second, S&W 4516. A double action .45acp on a compact (for the time) frame. Accurate but...

Is Hunting Shack .45-70 Government loads safe for use in antique trapdoor rifles?

For what it's worth, I don't think the trapdoor is going to like that skinny hard cast bullet. The trapdoor tends to like softer bullets sized a bit larger that what the modern lever guns like. Should not damage the gun but don't expect much in the way of accuracy.

Do you ever feel like your gun interests are just too varied to be healthy?

I am one of those that has a few guns. The reason is the same problem I have with Dieting. I can resist anything but temptation

Handguns are more convenient for home defense vs Rifles and Shotguns?

Over the years I have been asked many times what gun to use for home defense. My answer is always a shotgun, they are easy to use and work well inside a building. They always say No, I meant a handgun. My carry gun sets by the bed at night so I guess I understand the thinking that a Handgun...

    Ignorance on display story

First off, the OP clearly stated he was only wearing a T-shirt, no wonder she was starring :alien: . Just were was that holster clipped? To get back on track: I find the greeter's attempt to talk to the OP completely reasonable. As someone said 'this was a teachable moment' and it turned out...

Wet ammo still fires fine (with a funny story)

Back around 70 or 71 I found my first Chief of Police at the sink with a wire brush scrubbing his ammo under running water with an abrasive cleanser. He did it ever year to keep things clean and shinny. When told that was not a good idea he laughed and said they would be fine. In the late...

Perhaps it's time for a new forum rule ... or two

Wow, if I wanted someone making rules about what I can say and when I can say it I would have voted for Obama and Hillary. No thanks

Bond Arms: Century 2000 vs Cowboy Defender

I have one without the trigger guard. If I were to do it over I would pick one with the trigger guard. Should make hanging onto the thing a bit easier.

what's your favortie or best "trunk gun" ?

What makes a good trunk/truck gun? Cheap un-papered Cheap in case its damaged, lost, stolen, or confiscated un-papered in case the need arises to loose it For me, its not worth the trouble to keep a gun in the vehicle. Too much danger of it being stolen.

    Gun jams?

Years ago in the middle of the night I went out on the interstate to finish a deer that had been hit by a car. All the G&F and Highway patrol guys were long in bed. Pulled out the 870 and ran the slide but it jammed solid and I could not clear it. Gave up and used my revolver. Back at the...

    Ohio AR deer rifle caliber

Ohio seems to be a bit strange in that they individually list the cartridges THAT ARE ALLOWED. The OP posted the whole list so no blackouts or bushmaster variations. I could be happy with any number of those straight walled cartridges, if I had to be :) . From Ohio's 2015 hunting regs: "The...

EDC/CCW: how many rounds do YOU carry?

I am a retired LE and carried a Glock 26 for years with no spare magazine. 10 seems like a reasonable number based on my experience and knowledge of how shootings normally work out. 10 may be on the low side considering the current state of the world but it's the minimum number I picked. Pick...

    45/70 Springfield Trapdoor

Might want to get ahold of a copy of the book 'Loading Cartridges for the original 45-70 Trap Door Springfield Rifle and Carbine' by J S Wolf. Even if you want to stay with smokeless powder there is a lot of History and Information in this book that will make the trapdoor a more enjoyable...
