    New Ruger .338 RCM

I shot my first mule deer in 1977, in Colorado when I lived in Oregon. Yeah...I'm a little attached :D. Can't imagine living in California, though. Both of my daughters do, even though neither one was born there or lived there until they were adults on their own. I was there a couple of...

    New Ruger .338 RCM

Where do I hunt mule deer? Well...over the years I have hunted them in Oregon, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Idaho and Montana. The one with the .338 Federal I killed in Montana last year. This year I will hunt for mule deer in Idaho, Montana and South Dakota, plus blacktails in...

    New Ruger .338 RCM

Nice pig...:). I have a .338 Federal...a custom-barreled Mark II RSI. Very handy little rifle, and it shoots 185 TSX's at 2600 fps into tight little groups. Also kills mule deer nicely, if last year's experience is any example. Dennis

    New Ruger .338 RCM

Yep...if they'd just dump the plastic points I'd try some.... In truth -- I shot the big boar with a 200-gr Interlock, lead point and all, at 2750 fps and the bullet went in one side and out the other of the pig -- through the spine and the shoulder. Pig fell over dead instantly...

Nice bear; nice rifle; nice job. I'm not as SST fan, but that may be mostly because I just don't like the look of plastic points...:D. Dennis

Photobucket pics seem to show up pretty well. That would be my best recommendation...OK, it's the only way I know how to post pics on these sites.... Dennis

Question about sights for those that use bolt action rifles for bear defense in AK...

Never been there, have you? Everyone I know who has actually "defended" themselves against bears, of either species, shot them at close range and didn't use sights or scopes. If they're more than 10 or 15 yards out, they aren't really a threat... There are lots of adequate to outstanding...

Question about sights for those that use bolt action rifles for bear defense in AK...

Stores in Ketchikan, Craig and Juneau all have .325 WSM ammo; any place with a gun store has it or can get it. Handloading is best, of course. I don't know anyone who has shot or seen shot a bear with a Foster-style slug who thinks it's a good idea. Brenneke slugs, being hardened, saboted...

Question about sights for those that use bolt action rifles for bear defense in AK...

If the bear is close enough to bite you don't need sights. If the bear is far enough away to use the scope, use it. Shotgun slugs, unless Brenneke or other hardened penetrators, are a particularly poor choice for bears. They are made of soft lead and don't penetrate well. There are...

    Help me out Hog Hunters.

I've eaten dozens of deer, and am absolutely convinced that adult, mature bucks have more flavor and better meat than any doe and far better than yearling bucks. Any deer must be shot and handled properly, aged correctly, cut and wrapped correctly, of course. If all that is done right, and...

    New Ruger .338 RCM

I have a Leupold FX II 4X with German #1 reticle presently on mine, but that scope I bought for my .375 Ruger. This spring I'll acquire an FX II 6X for the .338 RCM, with a post and duplex reticle. I have become pretty satisfied with fixed scopes in the 3X, 4X and 6X flavors. (As a side note...

    New Ruger .338 RCM

I can guarantee that the .338 RCM will kill a hog...:D... I've been shooting mine since January, and took it to Texas for pigs. Three pigs later, one each with a 185 TSX, 210 TSX and 200 gr Hornady Spire Point, I am convinced that bullets running from 2650 fps to 2850 fps will penetrate...
