I too am a 1911 kind of guy and won't usually leave home with out it but---my 642 is always with me every day, every where and I mean every where. I can not conceal the .45 where I work and guns are forbidden there. I can conceal my Smith. There are a lot of hostile people where I work.
First: Start leaving now.
Second: Why would you and a much better shooter be out with only one gun? Better shooter wouldn't leave home without his.
Third. I doubt that we would be talking about "giving." Better shooter would be taking.
My sole experience with cylinder failure occured in 1970 with a Smith 36. I got it in a trade and did not check it closely as it was as new and I was in a hurry. I don't know what was fired in the little 5 shooter but the chambers were bulged, all 5.

If the slide is locked to the rear while loading, by all means, depress the slide stop.
If the slide is forward when inserting a magazine, then rack the slide. There is no reason to lock the slide to the rear then depress the slide stop to release the slide under this circumstance.
