    Gonna play devils advocate here. Past 100yds buy a .223. Ammo isn't any more expensive, at least around here, and you can reload if you wish. If you already reload and .223 is a bit more than you need a 22 hornet would be nice.

    I never used to understand that until I bought good glass. I'll never go back. It makes shooting so much easier and more enjoyable. I have no problem paying more for optics than the rifle.

    Ya, but he's trying to justify another rifle. :) .264 mag or 7mm mag would be my choice. edit: I love my 25-06 as well, and the recoil is very mild.

    Effective Range of 204 Ruger

    I've only shot my .204 CZ at the range, but 500 yds. is no problem at all. Water filled 1 pound bottles of RL22 and H335 at 500yds. were fairly easy in the wind. I'd say much easier to shoot in the wind than the .223 it replaced. The .204 seems to have a lot more explosive power at that range...

    Need a new .223

    Any of the .223 varmint guns are going to be very accurate. The choice really isn't going to be which one is more accurate, but which rifle has the features you want. This includes which one looks the nicest to you. For me Ruger, CZ, Kimber, and Winchester(CRF only) are all good choices.

    .22LR rifle and scope setup under $500

    CZs and Rugers come with rings so that'll help a little. Check out Sightron's rimfire scope as well. You can get them for $100 and the optics are superior to the Leupold rimfire option IMO. Not made in the US or glossy, but not made in China either(Japan)
