    Are 44 Revolvers Dying?

You must be kidding!? I have a friend, he is 6'6", toting Savage in 338 LM. He knocks regularly 300-400 lbs true wild boars (we do not have feral ones) on 440-550 yards (converting from 400-500 meters). Personally, using 8x57, 30-06, 7x64 or 270 Winchester, I set my limit to 220 yards...

Which 1911, 6" long, has extended rails?

I apologize for silly questions, my knowledge about 1911 is, at the best, mediocre. As a along term goal, I am thinking about a nice 1911 with 6" barrel/slide (or up to 7", if available). Regarding caliber, no decision yet, but leaning toward 10 mm Auto. As for pistol itself, I had seen some...

    Are 44 Revolvers Dying?

You are quite close, but as a hunting round, or defense from nasty 4 legged creatures in lower 48, IMO 45 Colt has the edge over 44 (either hotter 44 Special or milder 44 Magnum, talking about 250-265 grains at 1100 fps). 45 is tad bigger caliber, it could throw slightly heavier bullet at the...

My favorite 357 All Steel Revolver

This particular: Hope to receive it in foreseeable future. Coming from Germany, so it will take some time. Why Security Six? I had in 357 Magnum; S&W 686, 6", Ruger Bisley, 7.5" and S&W 27, 5". I was shooting Python and S&W 66, both 6". I found that, for a caliber, first 4 are too heavy. I...

Who made Bisley hammer for Ruger Old Army? Is it made from the scratch, or Bisley hammer spur just welded on ROA hammer?

Thoughts on .36 caliber 1858 repros?

    They list them as RGT36 (blue) and RGST36 (stainless) https://www.pietta.us/products/Muzzleloadinguns/Remington/gallery/Remington_1858_18.html Available from Taylor's & Company https://www.taylorsfirearms.com/1858-remington-stainless-target-6-5-36-rb1-200086.html .

Thoughts on .36 caliber 1858 repros?

Especially if it's Ruger Old Army. Actuality, I have both, ROA and 1858 Uberti Target, both stainless. And as a matter of fact, 1858 has tad better fit and finish than ROA. However, considering everything, especially the strength and cylinder collar on ROA to prevent buildup in cylinder base pin...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

MANY THANKS SIR!!! This is just fantastic website with black powder calculator. I tried to see what we can get from 45 Colt, stuffing 42.5 grains of FFFG, behind 300 grain bullet, assuming that I am correct in my posts #24 and #57, and this is the result: If I have it right, "Barrel length"...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Vibratory table is a device that is used to compact loose material like a sand, soil, metal dust, etc, when it is in a jar or pot. It could be also used for cleaning with some kind of abrasive. In our case for compacting black powder in brass...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Just stumbled upon very interesting thread "Full Power 45 Colt Loads" on https://www.cascity.com/forumhall/index.php?topic=57532.40 , and post by medic15al, Reply #42 on: June 04, 2016, 01:07:18 PM: The load is 40 grns of FFFG (3F) Olde Eynsford under a 250grn PRS Big Lube bullet. All loads...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

"Shooting a cylinder full of Bullseye (Ruger Old Army) without damage" is actually the fact, but for testing purposes https://www.thehighroad.org/index.php?threads/roa-loaded-w-smokeless-evidence.844542/ . Bill Ruger wanted sturdy revolver that even the dumbest guy wouldn't kill himself and sink...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Also, I can use RCBS Rock Chucker for compression, and Lyman Turret for seating. However, I am thinking about press in my previous post for (among other things) bullet swagging. I do not want to ruin Rock Chucker.

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

@Ugly Sauce, thank you for so detailed explanation. When I mentioned "powder should be still slightly pressed with bullet", I was thinking about compressing AFTER dumping powder through drop tube. I would expect that using drop, tube powder will be more compacted at the bottom of the case, than...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Vibration table is just a possibility. Otherwise, if I am going to reload, it will be using drop tube. If I got it right, after damping black powder through drop tube, ideally, powder should be still slightly pressed with bullet. Any suggestion how much bullet should be pushed to further...

Top loads using black powder in modern large caliber revolvers

Anybody tried vibration table to get black powder compacted in the case? How it compares with drop tube? Seems to me as a simple procedure; using standard powder measures, damp powder in cases, cases in loading tray, and whole tray on vibration table. Any affordable vibration table that will work?
