How about a Winchester 71 chambered in 450 Alaskan?

    Rook And Rabbit Rifles

Ballard Rifles offers a "modern" version of a Rook & Rabbit. Not exactly inexpensive but interesting and cool nonetheless. One of those in 38 Colt (Short or Long) would be pretty sweet.

    M1A caliber conversions.

So I've got a couple of things to run by the M1A crowd here. Back in gunsmithing school, a few of us started to talk about the possibilities of different calibers in the M1A platforms. With that in mind, would it be possible to convert an M1A to another 308 Win. based cartridge? Specifically...

Stainless steel considerations with the 1911

I built a CCO using a stainless frame and carbon slide. I chose this primarily so that I could blue the slide and go with a two-tone appearance. So far, I've experienced no unusual or accelerated wear with this combination at all. In fact, I've heard from several credible sources that this...

    350 rem. mag

trueblue1776, Not to split hairs but the 35 Remington and the 350 Rem. Mag. are two completely different cartridges. As you suspected, the 35 Rem. is an older cartridge with mild recoil. The 350 Rem. Mag. is a short, belted case that was first introduced in the mid-'60's. It was recently...

    10 MM Dream Gun!

There's a lot I like about that pistol but those "tacti-cool" features ultimately detract from it. I have a vision of what a Longslide 1911 in 10mm should be and it's not that. I do applaud Springfield for, at least, experimenting with the 10mm cartridge. I view any new gun in 10mm as a good...

    Another 35 Whelen question

While it will never be as plentiful as 270 Win., 7mm Rem. Mag., or 30-06, I think 35 Whelen factory ammo will always be available, to some extent. In fact, after dropping it for a year, Federal re-introduced its 225-gr. Bear Claw loading because of high consumer demand. To me, that says...

    The first 1911 we buy

SA's Mil-Spec and the STI Spartan are both sound choices for a first 1911. Of these, I'd vote for the Mil-Spec. It's a solid pistol and is a good base for customization later on. You may also want to look at the Dan Wesson 1911's. They are a tremendous value and use top-quality small parts.

    A Genuine .38 caliber Round

A long time ago, Romania was looking at adopting the 1911 for their military. They wanted a true .38 caliber bullet so Colt developed the 9.8 ACP. It used a bullet that measured .378-.381 at 130-gr. and the case was roughly the same length as the 45 ACP. It was also rimless so that it could...

"Non-standard" caliber, but not a reloader woes

I know it's not in the weight you were looking for but you may want to try a box of the Federal Premium 140-gr. Nosler Partition. It's unfortunate that 7mm Mauser is neglected by the American ammo manufacturers and the loads that are available are pretty anemic. If you could ever locate a...

    oddball 1911's

I'm the same way. I've got 1911's in 9x23 Winchester and 10mm. I came across a 1911 barrel in 41 Action Express a while ago and would like to use it for a build someday. The Tokarev round is too long for the 1911 but one .30 cal. pistol round that would work is 30 Luger. I've always wanted a...

Ruger No. 1 vs CZ-550 Safari

Is a big, belted magnum cartridge an absolute necessity :barf:? Were it me, and given your non-hunting criteria, I'd look at the CZ-550 American in 9.3x62 or the Ruger No.1 in 9.3x74R. Ammunition for both is no less difficult to find when compared to the belted mags (no less costly as well)...

    .300 Win Mag VS .308

Have you given any consideration to the .30-06? While I don't consider it a "compromise", it does (kinda) "split the difference". It can handle heavier bullets (180-gr. or more) better than the .308 but is more manageable in the recoil dept. than the .300 WM. Brass, bullets, and reloading...
