To answer your original question, the main modification required to turn an Uzi mag into a SMG mag is to add the mag catch slot for the Colt style mag release. (about an inch down from the top of the magazine) There are other "tweaks" that make them run better.... but that is the main one.

Yes. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't. It all depends on the individual rifle and barrel. You can try it without risking much. If it doesn't work, you can always add forend pressure with AcraGlass, JB Weld, or a couple layers of tape.
