Seedy Hotel--knock on the door at five AM

Not to flame you too hard, Cosmo, but I guess the way I was raised, we identified more with our community and our police force than with the bad guys. I always figured that the police are hired primarily to protect my community, particularly those less able than me to protect themselves. If...

    older Dan Wesson .44, 6"

Gotta love DW weapons. Go for it. Check it for timing (the only problem mine ever had). Also, be careful of the vented compensated versions. Though they make for an awsome light-show, some people have had problems with grunge build-up inside of the shroud, making disassembly nearly...

Seedy Hotel--knock on the door at five AM

Just the facts, Ma'am. Cosmo, I learned the hard way to not discuss with police whether or not I'm armed. I'm staying quietly in my room, so until the shooting starts, it's irrelevent. What has worked for me has been to call and be calmly factual. "I'm soandso, staying at the soandso...

44 Special 180gr Light Loads Wanted

Mikul, My favorite newbie load is 5gr of WW231 under a 180gr wadcutter, but in .44Mag brass. It's mild and quiet, and cuts one ragged hole from my Dan Wesson. I use magnum primers for everything I shoot in the .44. I use it to with newbies to start them going up in power. Try it...

Advice Request: Cleaning Tips for vintage Mod 1861 Musket

Can anybody give me advise, and/or refer me to a good detailed guide (human, book, web) regarding how to cleaning my treasured antique Springfield Model 1861 rifle. I'm also interested in learning about common pitfalls that may bedevil newbies trying to maintain Civil War era muskets...

    "Scout Scopes" or sumthin??

I have a Savage Scout with a Leupold 2x. I thought it would be odd, but within 1/2 an hour, the advantages were obvious. As a general purpose gun, the Scout must allow for fast shots, and here the concept shines. You look at your target, bring the rifle up to position, and the scope...

    Do I Need A Micrometer?

I use my mic to measure max case length... ... to sort cases that need trimming. If you're re-using cases for max life, it's a necessity IMO. It's overkill, but I also use it for OAL measurement. Plus, it looks cool in my loading set-up.:p Got mine from Dillon. Fair price. Good quality.

    clean burning powder

WW296 Cleaner Than 2400... ... in my experience with .357M and .44M. Remember, though, that you need a hot magnum primer to light this stuff, and a tight crimp to give it a chance to burn hot and clean. With light crimps, I found it dirty, flashy, and spitting unburnt powder. Nasty. But...

    Newbie reloader question- which powders?

WW231, if I had to pick just one WW231 is clean, efficient, and can be used to create loads from very light to light-magnum levels. Look to Winchester booklets in gun shops or their website for truly wide-ranging load levels from one powder. If I want the hottest loads, I step up to WW296...

    Light, fast .44mag?

Thoughts: 1- I've found the highest velocities tend to come from Remington and CorBon products, in standard weights. 2-I've had great results with factory and re-loads using Remington's Semi-Jacketed Hollow Point bullets in 180gr and 240gr. My boomer reloads mostly used WW296, in...

    Quiet Loads

Title of NRA Reloading Manual Thirties- Sorry. but I can't seem to put my hands on my copy right now. I'll try again as soon as I can make the time. Until then, please consider checking the NRA websight. It's a big paperback book (something like 8x10) and I believe it's titled...

    Quiet Loads

.38Spl Ultra Light Loads, and .44 too Thirties- The NRA has a softcover Handloading book that details how to develop ultra-low loads, and uses a .38 as the test bed. As I recall, they used 148WC with Bullseye. I think they got loads down below one grain! Be carefull, and follow their...

    Quiet Loads

Detonation vs. Progressive Burn DT- The theory is that when a cartridge is more or less full of powder, only the powder near the flash hole is exposed to the primer flame. The progressive fire-front builds pressure slowly; pressure being moderated by the lengthening combustion chamber...

    quiet tumblers

LarryW, My tumbler sucks its cooling air up from below. It came with specific directions to not put it on a carpet, as the reduced air flow and subsequently increased motor temperatures could reduce motor life, or (conceivably) become a fire hazard. Fire is a red-flag item in my home! :)...

    .44 Special/.44 Mag

I like Blue Dot, but use it less and less these days due to the amount of dirt. I use magnum primers for everything .44. WW296 fuels my full-throttle loads, and WW231 for most everything else. 231's sorta like Unique, but better: it loads well up or down, if you light it with a big fire...
