I developed a load for my .30-06 Sako Finnbear years ago that uses 165 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips. They are a little more expensive than a "standard" hunting bullet, but in my rifle they are very accurate and deadly on deer. I consider them worthwhile just because of the accuracy.
Any time someone tells me that semi-auto firearms with large capacity magazines are only for killing lots of people quickly, I ask them why we would furnish them to law enforcement officers. Why would we want our police to kill lots of people quickly?
I think there is a state or 2 that has laws against hollow points, but I'm sure TN isn't one of them. There is also at least one firearms instructor and gun writer who strongly recommends not using anything but factory ammo for self defense.
While I can understand the thinking, I believe that...
It looks to me like the rifling is cutting the plated surface and leaving a "flap" of jacket hanging off the side of the bullet. I'll bet that the width of the slot next to the bullet hole will match the width of the rifling groove or land.
I can think of one case where it makes sense. When discussing the .308 family of AR type rifles, there is the Armalite style or "platform" and the DPMS style or "platform" and the uppers and lowers are not interchangeable.
As far as cartridge length, there is or was a company named Carr who was making a AR style rifle in .30-06 which would be a long enough action to accomodate the .257 Roberts.
It would be an expensive proposition, but I think it could be done.
While I'm sure it could be done, chambering for .257 is going to be expensive because it's going to be an "oddball" job. You could save a lot of money by going to a standard chambering like .260 Remington, which would likely give nearly identical performance.
For a folding rear sight, check out the Matech. It's what the gov. issues and can be found online very reasonably priced.
For an inexpensive low power scope, I like the Weaver 1-3x. The optics are very good and it's a rugged scope.
I like the YHM cantilevered mounts. IMHO, putting the...
I pack mine similar to W.E.G's method. I bag the ammo in ziplocks in convenient quantities with a label identifying the load. One thing I've started doing is masking and spraying the bottom and about 1" up the sides of my cans with pick-up bed liner. It seems to help with rust on the cans and...
I tend to shoot with my nose close to the charging handle. Most of the one piece mounts don't allow enough eye relief for my taste. I usually use a YHM cantilever rail with standard rings. I also like the Weaver V3 for a good low priced AR optic.
When my son was about that age, I set him up with an old Ithaca 37 that I shortened the buttstock on and installed a good recoil pad. He went through many boxes of 1oz. handloaded target loads with that gun.
We still have it and I had a heck of a time finding a decent full length buttstock...
Blade Tech makes a couple different belt holsters for the G21SF with the picatinny rail. I just talked to the guy today.
They're good people and make a quality product.
