STUPID things taught in Gun Classes

OK, lets take that T/R/Re-Assess one step further. Does anyone teach doing that WHILE moving to cover? Why stand there flat footed, when you could be moving 'off the X'? Just in case you A) missed or B) the outlaw failed to read the advertising for your jacketed hollow point nuclear tipped...

STUPID things taught in Gun Classes

Let's subject this "know what it's like to be shot at" to it's logical extension. Have you ever been told that, if you are shot in a gunfight, you need to continue the fight? I have. Then, the logical extension is for the ""instructor"" to shoot you, "so you will know what it feels like"...

STUPID things taught in Gun Classes

Do you include the ""instructor"" who told students to only carry 5 rounds in a 6 shot DA revolver, "so the hammer rests on an empty chamber"? Or the guy who insisted that the reason a .45 was so effective was because the bullets tumbled end over end in flight? (He got that from his D.I. in the...

    CCW w/ a Weaponlight

I finally bought a weapon mounted light for a handgun. I found an old style light to fit my SIG 220. This is used as my bedside gun, not (usually) a CCW gun. I still like the separate light, as I know how to use it without pointing a loaded gun at an unknown.

    The Chamber Check - WHY?

I'm surprized that your friend can't tell the difference between a loaded and an empty magazine. And I teach that you NEVER put an empty (pistol) magazine back in your pouch. Put it a pocket, under your arm, in your mouth, stuff it in your belt. But NEVER back in your pouch - lest when you...

    The Chamber Check - WHY?

I'm not trying to argue with anyone, or even suggest that they should change the way they do things. I'm just trying to figure out why people do the things they do. Personally, I don't check my carry gun unless it goes out of my control. I get nervious around folks who are so unsure of the...

    The Chamber Check - WHY?

Thank you Crofrog. I started this thread to see why people check a carry gun that no one else has had access to. Not rifles that had not been cleaned, nor guns thought to be empty and stored, or guns that had been handled to, or accessed by, others. In short, I'm trying to figure out why some...

    The Chamber Check - WHY?

I certainly agree that any gun from the safe, or from any place other than my holster, is checked every time it is picked up. Living out ""in the country"", I have several loaded guns around the house. They may be needed in an instant (mostly for the feral dogs around here), they don't get...

    The Chamber Check - WHY?

NineseveN, I think it is more a matter of training in two areas: 1. Focus. When I see a gun out of a holster, I focus on the gun, and what is being done with it, to the exclusion of all else. Particularly if it is in my hands. 2. Observation. I am a trained observer. Just Saturday, I responded...

Has any Army ever adopted a lever action?

Much of the objection to lever action rifles was an objection to all repeaters: "The troops would waste ammo, and increase the need for supplies". Our wonderful Ord. Dept. tried to keep single shot rifles because: 1. We had lots in inventory 2. They had a much lower rate of fire 3. They...

    The Chamber Check - WHY?

Reasons I don't "chamber check": 1. As noted, the carry gun is with me 24/7 - no one else has access to it. Since I focus when I load, I have no need to constantly insure it is loaded. I have proven to my self that I can count (rounds) all the way up to 8 - even 16 on occasion these days. 2...

    The Chamber Check - WHY?

Some of your replys have me confused. If you were carrying a fully loaded gun, and removed both the magazine and the round in the chamber, where did the round from the chamber go, that it did not bring to your notice that your magazine (and thus your handgun) were not fully loaded? Perhaps...

Has any Army ever adopted a lever action?

Take the next step. Since all semi and fully automatic firearms utilize the principal of the lever (including revolvers), let's distort the meaning to "All firearms that have levers in them are lever guns!" (You don't think they do? Look at triggers, safetys, extractors, etc.)

    The Chamber Check - WHY?

Some of you clearly missed two important points in my original post: 1. The pistol never left my custody and control. If it had, I would have checked it. 2. I did not say never check any pistol. I was discussing a personal defense handgun, carried on the person. If anyone hands me a...

Has any Army ever adopted a lever action?

Cosmo, you may have a point .... right up until it's time to reload. Then, the 1903 with chargers trumps your 99.
