I live in a Subdivision and I have dispatched at least 30 since last year with a Gamo Silent Cat .177 cal rifle. Normal shots up to sixty feet with a Simmons scope set at 4 power.

You may want to look at this video on this subject and his recommendation. I have it loaded in my mag for home defense. PDX1 Defender.

I like my S&W M&P 15-22 and I recently purchased a Ruger American compact. Both shoot very well and Monday,I tried out a Leupold VX! scope 3x9x40 on the Ruger. I needed ten shots to zero it at 25yds.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this rifle. I used to have one. It is a basic ar15. You aren't in a battlefield situation and this should do just fine. All you need to possibly buy is some type of red dot and a good mounted flashlight and also practice with it a lot. That is a good deal.
I just bought one a couple of weeks ago. I haven't broken it in yet. Nice rifle and mine is in .308 cal

I'll second the P226. I just acquired one from a Pawn Shop. I doubt if a mag was ever fired from it. I paid $599. Love this pistol. I also have the Ruger SR9c and the Glock 19.
I will say one thing. My .22 stopped this Racoon with one shot between the eyes about 15ft. I live right next to a patch of woods and this animal kept coming in the daytime. He was sick from rabies probably. I did everything to run him off but he just kept coming so my S&W M&P 15-22 did the job...
