I have an old Spar T press I still use occasionally. Sorry, not at home to take a picture. Also have an old rock crusher but the SparT is older I believe.
Yes just a light crimp. Never crimped rifle loads before but started doing it for both gas guns. I imagine Im just contacting the lands. I ALWAYS check the distance to the lands with every bullet in all my bolt guns but was under the impression that I couldnt drop the bolt with a bullet...
I do that with a cut case on my bolt guns to find the distance to the lands, just havent tried it in the AR10. Everything functioned fine although the ejection pattern ranged from 2 to 5 oclock depending on the charge. Rounds were made with CFE223, BLC-2 and IMR4166. 42.0 grains of IMR4166 had a...
I load tons of 308 for bolt guns but this is my first for a gas gun. Im currently running them at almost min OAL and what appears to be primer cratering was happening very close to the minumum start charge. Did that look like cratered primers to you or am I imagining it?
I recently purchased my first AR15 and first AR10 after only owning only bolt guns for 30 years. I took the new AR10 out to shoot for the first time recently and Im thinking it might have a short throat. I loaded up some Hornady 168 gr BTHP match with the intent to do some ladder testing with...
Not likely Ill shoot this one far enough to run out of elevation in that 34 mm tube. Ill definitely need more elevation when I finally build a custom LR rifle though.
I need recommendations for good rings or a mount for a 34mm scope tube with a 50mm objective. I originally bought an Arken SH4J to put on a bolt gun but decided I would like to put it on a PA10 with a 20"barrel.
I figured rings would be better since the Ar10 has more space for rings and not...
Ill go different than others and say get a 1st gen ruger american or savage axis and spend more on glass. The cheapest bolt guns now are more accurate than most high dollar custom guns from 30 years ago because of the aluminum V blocks that eliminate the need to bed the actions. I have...
I also now do my annealing with the lights off and just a small amount of background light to see to put the case in the drill and put my socket over the case. I use a tempil crayon for welding instead of the tempilaq paint but I rarely use it now since I can see the color change in the dim light.
Are you gonna lube the cases because they are nickel plated? I don't lube any automatic pistol calibers with carbide sizing die but I rarely load nickel cases. Ive loaded many thousand 40 s&w and its pretty easy since you have a little more leeway on powder charge than 9mm plus the bullets are...
I normally would agree but I carry my rifle till I get to a ladder stand then climb up. I carry it about 20 minutes total, 10 to the stand and 10 back to the truck. If I was hunting steeper terrain or walking further I would definitely want a lighter rifle for hunting. Right now I frequently...
Appreciate your input. I assumed since using a chassis would eliminate the need to bed the action that a chassis would naturally lead to greater accuracy potential. You know what they say about assuming.
I cant lie, if I could have everything like I wanted, I would have a pre 64 Model 70 that I could shoot a mile. Im very much into the look of classic deer rifles. But I also realize that if I want real precision, Ill probably have to use a chassis system. Im gonna try to find the shouldered...
Thank you, very informative. There were only 2 gunsmiths I knew about near where I live and 1 of them died recently. Thats sad considering I live in a relatively big city of Louisville KY. Lack of reputable gunsmiths to do this kind of work was the reason I was considering either a savage style...
