Yeah, a boom is typically comprised moreso of low frequency oscillations and sudden or 'crack' sounds have more high frequency components.
Re Recoil: Because its fun. For me anyway. I don't/can't hunt so that aspect is not a factor.
The sound quality is different which leads to difference perception - hands down the report from a 44 carries more energy of course. The 357 frequency sound spectrum (Fourier transform) will contain a greater contribution from the higher frequency components that the 44 mag I expect.
So I had a blaze at the range on Sunday with full loads and had no issues over 40 rounds (small but significant sample size). Go figure. The only variable is that it was bitterly cold which may affect part tolerances perhaps. At any rate I will still install/fit the replacement components...
Yes, that is likely true - the 8 3/8 barrel still had the unlocking problem but less frequently.
I also suspect that the previous owner shaved a little off the cylinder lock where it engages the trigger which may account for the apparent 'wear'. The revolver itself has actually had little...
The original cylinder stop was a bit worn and the new (old but unused) part did help a lot and allowed much more positive lock up. The spring seems fine but is just standard. I think an extra power item is worth trying as there is no significant downside to trying this. I'll inform this...
Thanks Earplug for the positive input :) Its a 240gr bullet but I am casting some gas checked 300 grain using a lee mold so shall see what effect that has at the range.
The unfluted style is a newer variation and can be had with a deeper cylinder notch from the notes I have read. So, in fact...
Yes I do know what I'm talking about having fitted cylinders and barrels to Smiths. That 4" your looking at didn't come with the gun, it had an 8 3/8 barrel which I replaced using correct procedure. The barrel to cylinder gap is set at 0.005" by myself.
Anyway, clearly from all the evidence...
I drive a 240gr projectile at about 1200 fps from a 4" barrel. Thats not unreasonable. The brass still extracts fine though there is a little drag - i.e. it doesn't just fall out.
What I want to do is add the parts from the endurance package. See if that helps. As far as I can tell I can...
About every six rounds I'll experience the cylinder unlocking (the cylinder stop pops out of the cylinder notch) and counter rotates. Is there a known fix/wisdom for this - eg stronger cylinder stop spring or a newer model cylinder etc? And no I won't download my 44 mag ammo, the gun seems...
