    The power:accuracy balance

I only have 20# on your daughter and have opted for the "more bangs, more bullets, more accuracy" option shooting .38 out of my S&W .357. In most situations, the sight of a handgun will turn bad guys around. The sound of gunfire in the bad guy's direction will turn them around. Any hit with...

Who prefers to carry a revolver and why.

Hand-fit is a prime consideration; what do you shoot better? A revolver was my first handgun for ease of use and reliability and remains my "go-to" gun. Guns are a gut feel but those of us born in the 60s did not grow up watching TV with clips popping out of the gun.

Cascading Failure in Judgment - How to Break The Cycle?

Thanks for the thoughtful discussion. The personal stories were all good. Boy Scouts, OODA loops, pilot training -- all relevant. (Simulators for real life are hard to find, so we rely on THR!) In a long thread, I begin to draft a comment, but all my comments were made by somebody else...

Revolver vs. Semi Auto in Longevity... Who wins?

All of the above -- well-made guns will last. But which will jam more during that lifetime? For a Cal Ripken-style "never-miss-a-day/never-misfire" gun, I would take the revolver. So shoot what you like.

what age should I teach gun safety?

Sam deserves another 1911 (or firearm of his choice). Kids need to learn to respect the power of a firearm. My father, a little slack on rules, is always impressed when I make my son repeat the rules when we go outside to shoot. While it is safe to treat toy guns the same as real guns, I do...

Madness after girl, 4, draws gun pic at school

Canada is a nice place to visit, but this school over-reacted. Even fearful anti-gun folks should at least ask questions. In suburban Chicago, we got a phone call from the school when my son complained about an abrasion from "my dad's gun" after he scraped his hand cocking the BB gun I...

    Classic Lever-Action Rifle

Ranges for deer of 125 and 150 yards were mentioned in a post above. Any other views and at what loads on range? Some of us do like the idea of same calibre rifles and handguns.

    Your favorite 16 Gauge Shotgun

Ammo depends on state. I have no problems finding 16 ga in the Dakotas or in Washington. In Illinois, I've had to order it. I found 16 ga slugs in Scheers in SD, but have had problems finding some buckshot. I did have shot bounce off a pheasant last year (it literally rained feathers, so...

    Recommend a SD Knife

HSO got it right (as usual). I go to church with a couple FBI agents. I was surprised at one who did not carry to church until I asked. he thought for a second, then mentioned it would probably destroy him personally and professionally not to be able to intervene. In Illinois, we have not...

    Shotgun for general hunting

Listen to your gut. You can become an effective hunter with either pump or semi-auto -- I still sometimes try to pump my sem-automatic. I also favor 16-gauge -- tradeoffs with size and kick. (I am small-framed.) Hunting is supposed to be fun and it is the most fun when you are the most...

    scrutiny in mcDonald?

That was pary of the point, Bear. Thanks for making it clearer. Even Yahoo posters were making fun of the right to defend themselves from gang violence now that guns were "allowed" on the South Side.

    .357 for whitetail deer

I'll be happier with my Henry lever action in .357. You guys are better shots and have bigger barrels than my S&W!

    scrutiny in mcDonald?

I think a split in the circuits will arise quickly (by Con Law standards, anyway). Circuits will slice and dice different aspects -- registration? ownerhip allowed in the home, bu tno public display or carry? hunting? All may get different levels of scrutiny in different circuits. For such a...

Losing Focus . . . Ratting on Myself

We all do similar things. Just be careful where we allow ourselves to lapse out --- while no place isabsolutely safe, it's hard to think where in the city I would allow a deep lapse.

McDonald SCOTUS Decision -- Master Thread

Good news, but hard road still ahead Still a lot of leeway allowed for a locality to impose "reasonable" restrictions. Great news that individual rights win out over the local government power to impose restrictions. Ownership in the home still has a way to go to be truly a lack of...
