I have had two of the EFKFiredragon barrels for my .45 acp xd service. Both of these barrels had the lug break off. I do use hot loads and accepted part of the responsibility, but don't think it should have happened. My factory barrel is going strong and has had the same ammo through it.

I believe you will find heat shields are on weapons that have bayonet lugs. This is so your hand does not get burned from a hot barrel when making a bayonet thrust. If it is on one with out the bayonet lug, it is only for cosmetics.

The xd tactical does have a one piece guiderod and spring assembly. which is a better setup than the two piece guiderod assembly. A person can up the spring to a 20lb. or change the whole guiderod to be able to use any 1911 spring. That way you could go up to a 28lb. spring.

bdubz0r: A stratified load is indeed a load that has layers. It has to be compressed to hold the layers in place. It does not have to be a duplex load, it could be a triplex or a quadruplex load.

I have been working on a .45 super load for my 230 grn. rngc bullet. Last range time I got an average of 1411 f.p.s./1017 f.p.m.e. Fastest of the 5 shots was 1456 f.p.s. This is a hunting load, not self-defense. You could probably line 5 bad guys up, and penetrate all of them.

If I were you, I would look into the .45 super. Find recomendations on how to build the gun up. Contrary to popular opinion, the .460 Rowland, and .45 super case is no stronger than a regular .45 acp case.
