Not much difference in recoil energy between the .223 and the .243 if that's any concern to you. Also puts you in the deer class if you're interested in that. A nice wooden stock would brighten up the whole gun but may not be available for a year or two from stockmakers. Nice gun...

I just picked up one and even if it is a plain rifle I trust the Savage name and got it on that basis. Inexpensive and good to have around the house or take an occasional deer.
Thanks, Radagast. Mine must be a .38 Safety Hammerless 2nd model (1887-1990) which fits the time frame with the lower serial number. I'll try Old Western Scrounger for ammo.
