Yes, and hunting elephants was very different then as they were found in the open plain, had no enemies and were not afraid of man. You hunt them now in the thickest jesse and often can't see them until you are right on top of them.

If hunting elephant you can bet there is a PH right behind the pistolero with a heavy double that will probably be used. In Moz and Zim you can use a handgun on buff, maybe even ele in zim, but it is not a c.ommon practice. Dead clients are not good for the PH's business.

If we are considering shotguns, I would have to go with an Ithaca Road Blocker. 10ga auto with 20in bbl and 3.5in chamber. That's a .775 caliber slug. Russ Broom in either Zim or Bots, can't remember which, uses one with 000 to follow up wounded leopards, fast bad actors.

Hizzie is on the right track--.404 Jeff, .458 WM or Lott. They work on cape buffalo and elephant so should be adequate for the biggest bear.
