    S&W 10-6 .357 Magnum Questions

I zeroed the caliper before measuring, it's a new battery, and I've calibrated it on known thickness of a headspace gauge. It's only off by .001". I would be interested in hearing from S&W. I'm hoping it won't cost me $30 just to find out if that's the original caliber.

    S&W 10-6 .357 Magnum Questions

Thanks! That's great info - many thanks! So does that make this a particularly collectable firearm? (I'd like to put a value on it for insurance purposes.) As promised, some pics...

    S&W 10-6 .357 Magnum Questions

Thanks! Thanks for all of the info, folks! First of all, yes, I meant that "MOD 10-6" is stamped on the inside frame when you swing out the cylinder. No, I don't have any ammo yet, but the cylinder measures just a hair over 10/16" long - or exactly 21/32". If it's a replacement barrel...

    S&W 10-6 .357 Magnum Questions

S&W 10-6 .357 Magnum Questions (pics added) A friend needed some Christmas funds for his kids so he sold me a revolver tonight that had been in his safe for 20+ years. It had some significant surface rust in a few spots, but it cleaned up pretty well with oil and steel wool. I'd call it about...

Need Help Identifying a Long Gun

Thanks for the responses folks. I need to do some more research and see if that regiment fielded any 1841's. Oh, and I'm pretty sure the photo was taken when he joined. "1861" is scribbled on the back of the tin-type plate along with his initials. Accoriding to my now deceased Great...

Need Help Identifying a Long Gun

Thanks Jay. I've been spending some time comparing it to pics of other long guns of the era that I can find online and now I'm leaning towards an 1841 Mississippi Rifle. I can only make out one mid-barrel band and what appears to be a small rear sight in front of the hammer. The end of the...

Need Help Identifying a Long Gun

I said "Long Gun" as I don't know if it was rifled or not. This is a pic of my GGGrandfather shortly after he enlisted in the 19th Alabama in August 1861. (He survived the war and became a postmaster in central FL, where he died in 1903.) Any ideas as to what it might be? I'd like to...

    Quality Nipple Wrench?

Somebody gave me a cheap nipple wrench when I got my new Uberti 1858 Remington a few weeks ago, but now I've shot it and want to remove the nipples for cleaning. Unfortunately, I only got three off before the metal ends flared out! (Cheap piece of crap! :banghead: ) Who makes a good quality...

    Are Double Wads OK?

It doesn't get any "grittier" than good old Southern (US) dry grits. Thanks for the idea about rolling the wad in with the paper. I may have to try that, and leave some space for filler on top. Perhaps I'll start with 20gr and use filler for the empty space, and see how it shoots. I'll...

    Are Double Wads OK?

New BP Shooter Question I'll be shooting 777 FFFg with my new Uberti 1858 Remington New Army. Based on what I've read here, it appears that I need to load about 25grns for a 30grn BP equivalant. I want to have the seated ball as close to the top of the cylinder as possible, though, so I need...

where can i buy a cheap black powder revolver?

I picked up my first BP revolver last week - a steel Uberti 1858 Remington - on Gunbroker.com for $200 brand new. The Cabela's CS flap holster arrived yesterday, and the combination is just gorgeous! Now I'm itching to get out to the range!
