The chambers have indeed a step down from the cartridge case diameter to bullet diameter.
The revolver reads .38 special so ,I know by now what ammo I can use.

Following your remarks I spent the night cleaning the gun so I get the serial number:
It is written in 3 separate lines as follows:

On the barrel side it reads:
COLT ARMY SPECIAL .38
On the barrel's top it reads:
PTF A.MFG CO.HARTFORD DT.USA
PATD. AUG 5 1884 JUNE 5 1900...
I do have a COLT.38 single action army with the inscription EBS 2227
EBS abbreviation stands fro Greek Royal Army in Greek.Could someone give me an idea on the model year for this gun?
