I've been loading without a chronograph for nearly 4 years. While it does not change my results on paper, it sure is nice to have some real numbers in front of you. I bought the Caldwell and really like that you can plug in your phone and use an app to record all your data. I thought I'd share some of my loads, hopefully it'll be of benefit to someone.

380acp- Ruger lcp- 105gr powder coated LRN- Mixed brass- win spp
2.7gr hp-38- avg 798fps, 16fps spread, 5 shots
3.0gr hp-38- avg 856fps, 19fps spread, 5 shots

300blk- 10.5" ar pistol- converted lc brass, Tula srp
150gr hornady fmj-16.7gr h110- avg 1923fps, 33fps spread, 10 shots
225gr powder coated lee cast bullet- 9.3gr w296- avg 1113fps, 51fps spread, 10 shots

45acp- glock41- mixed brass win lpp
230gr xtp- 5.7gr hp38- avg 878fps, 33fps spread, 10 shots
Powder coated 242gr lee lead truncated cone- 5.2gr bullseye- avg 918fps, 28fps spread, 10 shots
Alox lubed 242gr LTC- 4.8gr hp-38- avg 809fps, 23fps spread, 10 shots

38spl/357 mag fired from 6" Taurus 66(T) and 16" Rossi(R)- mixed brass

164gr powder coated lswc- 38 spl case- 3.6gr hp-38- avg fps 772(T) 945(R), spread 26(T) 33(R), 10 shots each

164gr powder coated lswc- new starline 357 case and cci srp- 15.6gr w296. Avg fps 1342(T) 1751(R), spread 71(T) 52(R) 10 shots each

158gr xtp- mixed 357 brass- Tula srp- 16.2gr w296- avg fps 1314.8(T) 1725(R), spread 25(T) 30(R), 5 shots

I was most interested in the fact that in my 357 loads, a 15.5 gr charge of w296 pushed my 164gr powder coated bullets 125fps faster than a 158gr xtp. I intend to work up another grain with my powder coated bullets as well as trying out the lil' gun that's been on my shelf for a year. 357 is a pretty darn stout cartridge out of a 16" barrel.

I reloaded for years without one, also. But, since getting one way back yonder...it has certainly been nice to have actual numbers...not more guesstimates.

As I used a lot of surplus powder I bought on early. Still use it once in a while.

After reloading for a few years, and a recent purchase of CFE Pistol powder, and bullets that needed seated deeper that data shown. I decided to purchase a chrono for peace of mind.

A $100 chrono is better then damaging a gun, whether $400 or $1500. :)

On my last range trip another shooter set up his chrono. First time I've ever even seen one at the range. He fired a few shots and I went over to see the results. It showed 3800 fps three shot average.Wow! Truthfully, the shot didn't sound like it was that hot. I don't remember the caliber.

I think this firmed my conviction that I need one of these.

 more gear to haul to the range :cuss:

:D

i used to haul the Caldwell in and out of the house to the van
it just stays in the van on the tripod now
i keep a spare battery with me (oddly in the 10 months ive had it, im still on the first battery)
if im doing a work up i set up all my strings ahead of time
so i just click the file and bang away
then send the the data to Google Drive for review and massaging
it really is one of the fun things i do at the range
