I have been wanting a 6.5 for a while now. Have the 223 covered times 2, the 308 covered times 3. Have a 6.8 SPC ASI custom Mini. For now I have a scope picked out, purchased and in hand a 6-20 Vortex Viper. Been reading the threads and checking out the models. Looking for a factory build. Must be target rifle capable. It won't be used for hunting except for supported shooting at range for the occasional wood chuck or coyote. I mostly shoot up to 300 yards. Been looking at the Ruger Model 77 Varmint. The Ruger Precision at it currently is sold is overpriced.

I'd never vote against a Savage. There is a reason I own two of them.

However, I'm also a Ruger American fan, and the American Predator in 6.5 is one sweet gun.

I looked at the Savage. Its about $830 plus tax from the local dealer. I have a Savage a 110 FP in 223. Its not my favorite rifle. Its trigger needs some help and the bolt is loosey goosey. It doesn't have many miles on it. However even with all those things its pretty accurate.

I did not that the Model 12 Varmint has a target trigger from the factory and most of the features already there. The reviews are excellent for a factory rifle.

Anyone else have any suggestions? I have up to $2k budgeted.

I'm not a big fan of Savages either... They shoot well, but so do a lot of rifles now.

If your only problem with the RPR is that they are going for close to msrp now, you could just wait for a deal. I picked mine up off of Gunbroker fairly recently from Kittery Trading Post with a buy it now of $1099. I saw two auctions they set up like that that were 24 hour auctions, I don't think either made it past the first hour. I'm pretty sure they post up a few of those deals when they get a shipment.

Otherwise Bergara makes a couple 6.5 CM rifles that people seem to be very happy with. The regular B-14 is more of a hunting rifle, but they also make the BPR-17 Tactical rifle. One of the 6.5 CM X-Bolt variants could be worth looking at as well.

Ks5shooter, I thought about the RPR, but the only ones I can find are priced about $400 above that price right now. I have heard reports about their loose stocks and other small issues. But I don't think any of those is a big issue. What's your opinion with yours? Would you do it again?

farmerboy78, unless someone has a better idea, I think I am going to get the Savage. Email from my local dealer says:

1039.00

And price for the Savage 12 LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor?

Me

Doesn't appear to be too bad a price. Already have the scope. Add 100 empties, a set of dies, rings for the scope, bullets, a late night run to acquire (steal, I mean borrow) some H4350 since its not found anywhere, and I am in business.

I use accurate 4350 for my Creedmoor. I'm using the 123gr amax over 42gr of accurate 4350 and I am getting 2920fps and amazing accuracy and consistency . I am currently developing another load using a 140gr berger hybrid since I already use that bullet in my 6.5-06... you will be happy with the lrp... dark eagle customs makes a 10 round magazine for it, I have one and its great! And on another note, the precision accutrigger will go down incredibly low. I turned mine all the way up to 1.5 lbs to use for my needs.

Is Accurate 4350 temp stable like H4350? I'm using H in my 6.5 and like dh1633pm said, it's nowhere to be found... I only have a couple more pounds before I might need to find a substitute.

I can't answer that question. I do know that even with IMR4895 my go to powder for 308, when I shoot in the sun, I keep my ammo in the cooler and covered when in the Sun. I would say that since AA4350 is extruded that it is. I quick check at powder valley says its in stock. Might be the way to go. I am going to call Frank tomorrow and tell him to order me an LPR. Thanks.

Have you looked at the Tikka's? I have 243 lite in Stainless. The barrel profile is a good compromise between a heavy target barrel and a sporter.

It's been a very accurate rifle. 8ae4e1c6babac587850b508cf23e5aae.jpg

Buy the Savage, set aside @ $100-150 for mount&rings, and get the most scope you can for the remaining $$.

I haven't really considered the Tikka. I have a couple CZ's but never a Tikka. I will check them out in the morning when I rise. I do see they have a vamint model. Thanks.

entropy, thanks for your suggestion. I love the DNZ mounts. I might just repeat that. I already have the scope, a Vortex Viper 6-20. I already had three of that model so why learn new when you already have something you enjoy.

Brass, dies, bullets are on the way. Now, I just need to figure out what to buy. The Savage is on the list.

The "cheapest" alternative would be to buy a used action and have it blueprinted and rebarelled, even cheaper if you can provide your own. The 6.5 creedmoor could fit in a small action rifle, such as a Remington 700. The Tikka series all run off a large action so no issues there.

Bottom metal might be worth looking at, my 6.5x47 rounds (which is a wee bit shorter than the 6.5 CM) feed well from a .308 AI magazine, but I cannot speak for 6.5 CM.

Yes I am very happy with it. Quality fit and finish are great. No loose stock issue. Only shot it with iron sights to do barrel break in at 50 yds groups very well.

Ks5shooter, thanks for the report on the RPR. They certainly are a shooter. Not sure I want to pay the premium. Otherwise its six months out. I didn't know that you were allowed to own a rifle with a pistol grip in the Garden State.

WelshShooter, I thought about going the Remington 700 route. Heck I was born in Ilion and my Grandfather and Uncle retired from "the Arms" as it is known locally. The only issue with that is barrel lead time. Most of the quality barrel makers are way behind. I do wish that Remington made a factory 6.5 rifle. I have two Remington Bolt Guns. Both good shooters.

ifit, nice suggestion. My friend bought one of the Howa's as a package and really enjoys it. I have been looking.

I have a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel on one of my AIs and the rounds feed very well from the AI AW magazine. I've shot a bunch of rounds through a Kimber Tactical chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor and that rifle uses the AICS magazine and the rounds fed very well from that too. The OAL length of 140gr loads is very close to standard .308 Win magazine length so feeding is not an issue.

I find it rather depressing that there aren't many choices for a "tactical" style 6.5 Creedmoor around the $1,000 mark. I really dislike Savage products and could care less about their reputed accuracy. It's not hard to make an accurate rifle. It's much harder to make a fast accurate rifle that performs well in all conditions and that simply isn't Savage. I'd buy a Bergara Premier Series LRP Elite rifle over anything from Savage and even the Ruger. MSRP is $2,640 but I bet you can find one for close to your budget of $2000.

I have the MAGPUL PRS strock on a couple of ARs and it's an excellent stock for sure. The adjustable LOP and comb are a great features and it's solid. The Bergara LRP accepts AICS magazines and Bergara barrels are outstanding for the money. The KEYMOUNT brake is a nice touch. I have that brake on my AI AW in 6.5 CM and it works well. If a suppressor is in your future you'd be hard pressed to beat the SANDMAN-S which integrates with the KEYMOUNT brake. BPI owns Bergara and also Dead Air Armament. I've shot a few Bergara rifles in the past few months and I was impressed with the B-14 Hunter in 6.5 CM. It was a tack driver and easily sub moa out to 525 yards with factory Hornady ammunition.

It's too bad that FN is so slow to the 6.5 game. An SPR in 6.5 Creedmoor, .260 Rem or 6.5x47 Lapua would be awesome.
