Description of AR for sale or trade:

PSA complete upper assembly with Anderson lower with Magpul furniture with a sharktooth muzzle break. Optic is Trinityforce 3-9x42 with additional micro red dot.

This Guy wants $650 or trade for my Ruger GP100

Is this an AR that would be a good starter?
I've read so much about ARs my head hurts.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would get on psa or Daytona tactical website and see if you cant put one together for cheaper, but that is a good basic price and/or starting point. It is the heyday of ar rifles, so keep the pistol they are only becoming more valuable.

How well do you like the Ruger? If you like it it's only an OK deal. If you don't like it, it's a good deal. There are so many AR's out there right now. Personally, I think I would keep the Ruger for now and look around a little longer.

That's a decent price, I doubt you could put one together cheaper. If it looks decent and hasn't been abused I would buy and keep the ruger.

http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-16-m4-moe-rifle-kit.html 449.99

http://www.andersonrifles.com/product/these-colors-never-run-lower-receiver-2235-56/ 52.50

http://www.opticsplanet.com/trinity-force-3-9x42-redcon-1-scope-combo.html 125.00

Total= 627.49 plus shipping and transfer of lower, so he is asking almost full retail for used. At the new price of the scope and micro dot it would be my guess they are about junk. If you really dislike the Ruger maybe OK deal, just don't expect much from the optic set up. I might would go 500.00.

you need to make sure it's california legal, if your location is accurate. you also want to make sure it's still legal in california after they ban bullet buttons etc.

I personally wouldn't....

Mix match of cheap and cheaper = worthless

Most of the gun is decent, but the optic set up is trash. The price isn't really good. I would buy those parts new from PSA, etc. for the same price and piece it together or buy another equally good starter AR for $600 online. That way it wasn't cobbled together in some schmuck's basement and has a manufacturer's warranty. Look for a deal on a S&W M&P Sport II, a Del Ton Sport, or buy a complete PSA upper and complete lower.

EDIT: DEGuns has M&P Sports for $517. Keep or sell your GP100.

Or this Del Ton for $489 on Grabagun

Thank you, Everyone!

Well, I was up late last night reading my butt off because mostly everyone here had probably gone to bed. It was a good thing. I found more info than I expected.
Before I go any farther, let me tell you a story about a friend who bought a kit about a month ago and dumped it off at my house and asked if I could help him put it together. I had never held an AR before but I went on YouTube cause I don't sleep that great, since retiring. He came over a week later and it was done. He was happy, took it home and says it works great. Only thing is, I couldn't tell you from memory who manufactured any part of it. After reading last night it must have been mostly low end stuff because he paid between $500 & $600 for it all. I believe that kit and the one for trade or sale both have illegal mag release buttons. CA is a bitch for a gun owner. I get mad everyday over one thing or another.
But last night, while reading I learned about what different chambering was available. The length of the barrels and how they have effect on what you want to do with it. The twist in the barrel, barrel types, CMV,4140 or CL, HP MP, the last ones, being the better ones, different types and qualities of steel bolts. Direct Impingement or Piston Gas and a whole lot more I 'd have to go back and refer to, but I now have pages of info to order my own and put it together my self and keep my Ruger as almost everyone has agreed it is worth having in my collection. It is a beast of a revolver that will last many lifetimes.
I want to thank everyone who replied here. I knew I would get some good counsel from THR.
If anyone wants to, I'd love to know what you consider a good AR. I can afford to spend somewhere between $1000-$1500 to have a quality rifle. If you think that's enough or not, I can wait a while, I'm not going anywhere yet. I want a nice one to last awhile.
All of these optics have me bewildered. I hear Iron sights work well if you want to get back on target quickly. That's an issue I can deal with afterwards.
I do read all advice and thank you again. Experience beats book learning every time, but you gotta start somewhere.

If you want to, and are able to, build (and it sounds like you are) then you can put together a really nice AR for $1000-$1500. I have several times. The first step is always deciding what use you'd like to optimize the carbine for. Then a forged lower with a rollmark you like, good upper (DD, BCM, something like that), nice trigger, grip and stock (optimized for your use) and some small parts and you are all set.

If for whatever reason you don't want to build, and are up for $1000-$1500 there's a thread a couple down from yours that takes three pages for everyone to say "Buy a Colt, an Aimpoint, and some ammo."

If you are in California and can't get a compliant lower for a reasonable price I think I would look at a bolt action Scout Rifle. I predict you will have fewer issues with your AG and the legal goon squad she keeps on staff. The whole idea is to stay under the radar and at the same time be able to defend yourself and shoot for sport. If the person who wants to trade for your Ruger can't tell you the rifle is California compliant and legally transferable, I'd run away from the deal.
