Hey guys I'm planning on going to the store tonight and based on the other night the most available pistol powder was titegroup and cfe pistol and maybe hp-38.

I would really like to load extreme, RMR or Berry's plated rounds for the cost and was wondering how each powder is for plated rounds. I seen some powders are too hot for plated and lead.

thanks for the advice.

One of my loads is cfe-p with RMR 124 gr RN plated at ~1.135 with 5.1 gr.
Same bullet and oal with hp-38 at 4.2 gr. My favorite.

I've been using CFE-P with various 9mm plated bullets and I like it. I run 5.3 grains under a 124 gr, 4.2 under a 147 gr and 5.6 grains under a 115 gr.

Awesome thanks guys. I picked those powders cause that's what I see the most of.

CFE-Pistol is my go to powder for 9mm, 45ACP and 38 special. I love it in both the 9mm and 38 special. I have personally found no powder that is better in 9mm and 38 special and I've used quite a bit of 231/hp38 in all of them. I have found it likes to be loaded at or near max in 9mm and midrange for 38 special and it plays well with lead, coated lead, plated and jacketed.

I use al three for 9mm&45. Of the three I personally use more of titegroup than the others but I load light target loads which prefer faster powders.

Saved the bottles when they are empty. When you graduate to 4 or 8 pound kegs of powder you can fill the empties with the corresponding powder for easier handling on the bench.

Xtreme 124gr fp, 4.8 of CFE at 1.100, works great for my purposes. Use it in my 40SW and have loaded my 45 ACP with it. Works great all around. Just loaded some RMR 115FMJ (9mm) with it also

4.1gr of HP38 under 124gr RMR plated bullets is my go to 9mm round. CFE-P is on my list to try someday.

There is plenty of data out there for HP-38. CFE-P, though less data, is working out to be a good 9mm powder. :)

I shot 147gr RMR RN with CFE-Pistol at last weeks range competiton. It's doing what I want. And more than one person noticed my dirty brass because I have a really nice powder puff load going with it. :D

My bag of RMR 147gr cast flat point came yesterday. I'll be loading them today for tomorrows run.

well ended up with HP-38. had a lot of that but barely any cfe pistol. I figure if I'm going to start with something start with what the local shop has a lot of. had 1lbs and kegs of it. cfe pistol only 1lbs.

hope I made the right choice.

You did well with HP-38, a good powder for your applications. But just so you know CFE Pistol was introduced around 2014 so it's at the beginning of it's run. HP-38 has been around forever. So don't worry if you want to try it get some. There may be spot shortages of one or the other powder but the situation today is 1000% better than in 2013-2015. I bought 12 pounds of CFE Pistol locally at the absolute height of the powder shortage. If you look at a burn chart you will see that HP-38 is a faster powder than CFE. Depends on what kinds of loads you settle on and what calibers will determine if CFE or HP-38 becomes your preference but I don't think you have to worry about long term not finding them.

Over the long period of the shortages, from my perspective, the easiest powders to locate were Hodgdon powders, Titegroup and CFE Pistol, HS-6, X-700 and Winchester WST, WSF and Alliant Unique.

HP-38 while not impossible was difficult to find, Alliant Bullseye has been difficult to find over the last year but before that it was generally available.

No guarantees in the powder business.

thanks guys. Im trying to buy 1 reloading thing a payday so seeing how there was a mess load of hp-38 payday there is a good chance another lbs could be there and cfe pistol not.

I just want to load 124gr plated or fmj 9mm rounds for my M&P 9 full size.

I also got 1k of cci 500 small pistol primers.

HP-38 & Win 231 are the same powder in different packaging. I've been using 4.6 gn W231 under 115gn Berry's plated @1.125-1.130" COL with good results. Seen good reviews of CFE-P, so picked some up that I'll be experimenting with eventually.

They are all good powders, especially if you reload other callibers.
In my 124gr Xtreme's I've used Titegroup and W231/HP38 and they are pretty good. My favorite though is BE-86 for the 9mm. Super accurate with that bullet and Bayou Coated 124's
