WHY?

A two sentence post, with very little information will get a wide variety of responses, or NO responses. A single action WHAT? Why the need for a full wadcutter? Very few full wadcutters are made in 45 caliber, there's just no need for them.

A SEMIwadcutter cuts clean holes in target paper and thousands of molds and ready cast bullets are made in .452-.454 diameters.

He posted this on another forum and the intent is for a defensive round that won't over penetrate. The problem with that theory is that a 250 gr. bullet of any design, pushed at 800 to 1,000 fps is going to just keep pushing it's way on through. A perfect example was the original loading for the .45-70 at roughly 1,250 to 1,300 fps. It would go completely through a buffalo a lot of the time, and the principle is basically the same.

I think the firearm is a Blackhawk.

I've always wondered why 38 special wadcutters were fairly popular, but in other calibers they're all but none existent.

Using the logic that semiwadcutters are just as good, than why the popularity in 38 special?

The .38 Special's use of full wadcutter and Hollow Base Wadcutter designs is because for so many years it was the king of Bullseye and PPC shooting. As such, there was a lot of demand for bullets that were not only accurate out to 50 yards, but that could be scored easily. A flat faced bullet cuts a very clean hole in target stock or cardboard, so when there is a question about a shot touching the line of the next higher score ring, it's more easily answered via the clean cut hole. Many matches were one by one point...........

The longer bearing surface also lends itself well to accuracy. My old K-38 PPC gun happens to love them.

I don't think I've ever seen a .45 Colt revolver used in either Bullseye or PPC competition, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been done.

1. The wadcutter seats much deeper in the voluminous 45 colt case and you get better burn out of light powder charges of dense powder. Keeps the SD to a minimum.

2. The heel base helps with guns such as the SAA where bore diameters can be all over the place cylinder to barrel .

FWIW, I've got an NOE mold that casts 250gr .45 wadcutters. My current .45 Colt load is 4.5gr of Bullseye. Haven't chronographed it yet, but it's not a heavy load and shoots well.

At one time I worked up a "wadcutter" load in .44 Mag brass using backward SWCs. The thought to use at bowling pins matches.

In actual practice, I didn't find it any more effective than running normal front-facing SWCs, so I finished shooting up what I had and haven't loaded any more.

I have carried a 45 colt Blackhawk with 255 gr lswc for roughly 30 years as a trail gun and for finishing hogs. In my experience, you have no chance of making these low penetration rounds and before you did so you would have incomplete burns and possibly squib rounds.

While a 6-8 bhn light hp may work, I have a twin that shoots .38 5 bhn 158 gr lswc-hp that is a perfect prescription.

Lee made 45 Colt wadcutter moulds 454-235-WC at one time.Out of production now. I have a single cavity version and they are great bullets.
