So, I have this untouched, unfired Cugir Romak-II (AK-74 clone) in the sporter/PSL-style stock. Question for the AK aficionados - is this something you would leave as-is? Or would you update the stocks with conventional pistol grip, etc.

I was again thinking of putting AK-74 stocks on this, but I seem to have a predisposition against modifying things.

This is a relic of the AWB era, which has sat in the back of my safe for ... years. Muzzle nut tack welded, but appears to be a threaded barrel. Wish I had bought more of these - picked this up for $195 back in the day.

I wish I bought more bakelite magazines.

I am not all that hung up on original configuration when it comes to AK's. IMO, their beauty is in their function, not their looks. The Magpul stocks work well and don't require permanent mods so you can keep the wood. Midwest industries makes good handguard replacements if you don't mind metal handguards.

Another thought: It is a nice looking rifle. If it does what you want it to do as it is, I wouldn't change it. IMO, the reason to upgrade is to mount optics or a light or change to a better stock/grip.

You might check out Youtube, but often the tacked on muzzle caps can be easily dremeled off. Depends on how the did it. I have a 5.45 Vepr and it turned out to be pretty easy. A traditional AK74 muzzle brake would look good on that rifle.

Adder: I missed where you said it was unfired. I might lean toward leaving it alone. Getting the AK74 muzzle brake would be all I would consider.

Perhaps one day we'll look back on the 1990s AWB and consider it a rare moment in time, upping the value of firearms purposely neutered for compliance. But for the foreseeable future, that rifle isn't worth anything more than what the current market will pay. And that market doesn't care about your stock furniture.

Besides, Romanian variants have always been a dime-a-dozen.

If you will be better served by a pistol grip or other modifications, go for it.

Personally, i'd shoot it and mod to suit your needs.. It's an AK knockoff, not a 45ACP Luger.

This helpful. I am an obsessive "preservationist," so modifying things is a bigger conundrum for me than most other folks.

On the other hand, I suppose I certainly can screw the original stock backon and swap back the compliance parts if I wanted to revert to the 1997 configuration.

I'm might just do this then ... unless somebody else can give me a reason otherwise.

I'd convert it with "modern" furniture, but as part of the 922(R) compliance you probably will need to swap to a US made trigger -- the Tapco and others are reasonably priced and result in a better trigger pull so this is actually a plus.

Unlike with a Saiga where you need to move the trigger guard and file the mag catch, if you save your original parts it'll be reversible.

If you want to "restore it" someday the wood will be in much better shape than if you use it much.
