I handled an amazing rifle today- A 1896 production 1895 Winchester in .40-72 with a flat side receiver and a three digit serial number (6XX). The gun was far from mint, but a well cared for veteran of the late frontier era. What an amazing piece of craftsmanship and history. Unfortunately, such an example has a high price tag, and something I could not swing with a family to feed...

while i have quite a few older pre-1900 rifles, i feel your pain and had to walk away from a few i would love to have gotten myself. and your right they were made when workers seemed to take more pride in their work, that seems to be lacking in a lot of firearm makers today.
