So, I am beyond the point where I can see iron sights on my handguns without glasses. I was deliberating about getting holo sights, something in the line of the Vortex Venom. Can one be easily mounted on a Ruger SP101 .22LR? It would be for range duty and grouse hunting in the fall. Other option would be to get a .22LR auto like a 22/45 or Buckmark. But the cost of a new gun and holo sights might be prohibitive if I don't sell/trade the revolver. On the other hand, the SP101 is becoming a solid safe queen since it isn't that enjoyable to shoot.

So the enjoyability is based upon the fact you can't see? That makes more sense.

I basically first looked at this thread just to move it over here to revolvers, because I have very little experience with pistol red dots, but I know you can mount them on revolvers. I can't imagine why you couldn't mount one on an SP101! Hopefully, someone with more knowledge will come along and explain this in depth, as now I am curious as well.

How about a laser? It would be easy enough to install a set of Crimson Trace grips and you would be back in business. It would also make the SP101 Into a great bedside gun or carry weapon.

a crimson trace or other grip laser is a decent option. I am pretty nearsighted can't see iron sights without glasses but I can easily see the laser so if my glasses broke and I had to shoot I can use the laser. I would probably recommend the green laser for carry use so you have better visibility in daylight but the red one works pretty well and the batteries last much longer.

Might be worth a phone call - JP Rifles makes a red dot mount compatible with the standard RH/SRH/BH/SBH/GP rear sight. I understand the SP101 rear sight assembly is smaller, but the mount can likely be modified to fit - easy to take material away to fit a smaller mortise. I have used a handful of the JP mounts for Burris fast fires and RMR's on Ruger revolvers.

It's a very well integrated sight set up, very low profile direct mount, rather than a typical pic/weaver mount with a pic adapter on the sight.

Thank you Varminterror. I just sent JP an inquiry by e-mail. I've never used lasers and I really don't know if a laser would be beneficial for my use. My primary use of guns is for hunting, in this case, mostly grouse. I've not seen or heard of using lasers for hunting before although I guess it isn't out of the realm of possibility.

NorthBorder, if you did not already follow the link posted earlier by REB, you should take a look. The link goes to a thread from someone who is making a mount that replaces the rear sight on an SP101. The mount appears to be compatible with a variety of small red dots. I have never handled the mount and have no connection to its maker, but it looks reasonable. I have envisioned such a part, but was not aware that anyone was making one. The mount is in some ways similar to the one from JP rifles, but I could not tell from their docs whether they support the SP101. I am sure they will clarify that question via email.

For most purposes, I do not consider a red dot and a laser to be interchangeable. This is too broad an issue to summarize quickly. But generally, when someone tells me their vision makes the sights difficult to see, I would tell them to get a red dot, not a laser.

Also, I believe that in some jurisdictions lasers are prohibited for hunting, though I am not certain about this.

Here is a mount I made for my GP100 10 shot .22.

It is polished steel and mounts with the sight screw and the cross pin for added strength. The red dot is about .100" above the top of the frame.
