I have a .38 S&W Safety Hammerless that I shot for the first time today. The trigger pull is unbelievably heavy, way beyond any other DA I've ever shot.

Is this standard with these old revolvers? I'm looking for suggestions to lighten the pull, or is it one of those things you just live with?

You could buy a replacement mainspring and work on that (thin it). But, it may compromise the reliability of the piece.

Those revolvers were deliberately made with heavy trigger pulls so they could not be fired by children, an advertised safety feature. (With no open hammer, the only way to fire the gun was by the trigger, so the safety claim was/is valid.)

Parts for those guns are scarce, and I would not suggest working on the original spring. I suggest some more practice (use snap caps to protect the firing pin if dry firing); surprisingly, the action is quite smooth and has a built in "hesitation point", so it is actually pretty easy to hit with that gun firing double action.

Thanks for the information. I really don't want to compromise the gun. It was made in 1883 and I doubt replacement parts are available.
