I've been reading and commenting on "which woods gun is appropriate" threads. After reading a lot and looking at what I own, I've decided to utilize my 411 in .40 for my hunting/hiking/camping/outdoors sidearm.

It was the first pistol I purchased in the 90's, in pretty good shape, but still a plain Jane gun that I won't have to worry about rain/snow. Aluminum frame so a bit lighter. A hogue aftermarket grip. It'll shoot just about any .40 ammo reliability.

Mostly it's what I've got that I won't fuss about if it gets a little beat up in the field. And I can't afford to buy a new or used gun, so I guess I'll use what I've got!

As long as you know how to shoot accurately, that .40 cal will do you just fine out in the mountains or plains of Colorado... or about any other place in the lower forty eight. :)

I do the same. I was looking at 10mm's, but finally decided to pull my old duty Glock 22 out of retirement. It was a fantastic duty gun for years. It's too ugly and works too well to ever sell.

I loaded it with 200 grain Underwood hardcast bullets.

Yeah, it's no 10mm. But they are energetic little cartridges and more potent than any handgun an old frontiersman carried.

And it saved me several hundred dollars over a new 10mm camping gun. ;-)

Not sure what I'll load it with yet; was thinking some sort of 180 grain load.

And I need to get a holster for it. I'm thinking of a flap or military style outdoors holster, just need to find one that'll hold a 411.

I, too, love the 3rd gen guns. My only wish - other than seeing them back in S&W's catalogue - is that S&W had made a decocker-only conversion for the slide-mounted safeties, the way Beretta has.
