what grip tape would you guys suggest for an older M&P9 fullsize? I shot an M&P 2.0 yesterday and fell in love with the textured grip.

2nd for Talon grips. I put a Talon grip on my Shield 45 and like it a lot (both the gun and the grips).

I friend of mine calls it 'skateboard' tape and others have mentioned step or swimming pool safety tape. I like it as a non permanent solution preferable to checkering. (I'm an old guy.)

If you like that particular pistol, I see no reason to buy another rather than experiment with the textured tape at least first. The other nice thing about tape (other than being removable) is one can cut it to fit exactly.

Check and see if TandemKross has a kit for it. I have their grip material on a Ruger sr22 and love it.

I have grip tape, same thing as skateboard tape, on another handgun. You can certainly get a good grip with it but it's sharp and gets uncomfortable after awhile.

If you follow the Talon instructions EXPLICITLY, you'll get good results.

I've got them on a .40 Shield, and a .380 BodyGuard. I like them. But I cleaned the grip frames BEFORE I even used the provided cleaner pad. And I carefully fitted them to frame, then followed by using a professional grade hair dryer to heat-set them to frame. (My youngest daughter, a hair-style professional, left a dryer at the house)...

If you stick them on a greasy frame, and don't heat-set them, expect them to peal off...

yeah you can buy a whole roll for a few bucks and cut out whatever design floats your boat for all the guns in your home. I've even used 220 sanding disks for guns.

I was looking into tape for mine a while back. Don't remember where I saw it, but some companies have tape that they swear by against peeling. Makes me wonder if you could get it off if you wanted to.
I chose to stipple one of mine. It turned out nice. It is time consuming to do correctly. I've done a couple other guns too. I plan on keeping the guns I did.

i just looked into these and some recent reviews say they are peeling off. have you guys had issues with this?
Most likely, that's the result of failing to follow the furnished instructions. Re: sentimental value, I wouldn't worry about it; talon grips can be removed with no permanent marks.
