Don't believe a Trapper is an NFA item. Unless some twit cut it under 26". OAL was 34 1/4". 16" Win M94 Trappers are all over the assorted auction sites.
Section III of that list covers a lot of guns which are considered to be exempt from being registered in the NFA registry because of their C&R status.
Look on Pages 36-38 to find a set of models and serial number ranges of Marlin lever guns with sub-16" barrels which can be transferred as standard, non-NFA firearms.
The "original" 92 and 94 Winchester Trappers had 14", 15", 16" barrels. As such, the 14" and 15" are "short barreled rifles" and registerable under NFA laws. I just don't know the process.
You're correct in that they are considered Curio and Relics but ATF must inspect them and determine if they were originally produced in that configuration of just arbitrarily cut down by their owner. I just don't know the process nor where to send it to get it certified as original.
I am considering buying a 1927, 1894 Winchester Trapper with a 14" bbl.
