Hornady Media Sifter Review

I'm not sure how an Operations Management System would help in cleaning brass.
I am sure there is a way, but it is pretty easy to do without a computer.:)

Technically, it's a sifter-review thread.;)

And to that, you've talked me into it, @DRAINSMITH. After looking at the batch sizes I do, I ordered one from Midway. The Dillons are a bit bulky for the space I have.

And It's RED!

Actually, my son is going to see an OMS in July, to have his tonsils and adenoids out.
I hope his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon is a good one. If she's good looking, I hope she's single!:D

I have the Dillon one and when I use it with dry media I do the deed outside. Has worked well for years that way. When using it with SS pins I fill the tub with as much water that I can and still turn the handle slowly without spilling any. The pins come out twice as easy and adds another rinse at the same time.

Same here. Fill tub with water, pour in the SSTL media and brass. Spin 10 rotations one way, 10 the other. Pour brass out onto drying rack. I havent found any pins in my brass in a long time.

I bought it because it appeared to be sturdier than the others and I wanted a covered model for use in the house. I tumble my loaded rounds. It’s flimsy but works ok.

Well, I have been blocked to Tilos post but I think I got my message thew to him The first sentence was the word "gravestone" letting him know that lead can and will kill you. And the last sentence asking him when he has got blood work. The reason I know I got thew was his last sentence thanking me for my concern about his health.

Now the one thing that bothers me is when he stated that he could ignore my advice. I once heard a saying that a wise man will learn from his mistakes but an intelligent man will learn from others mistakes. And as far as putting him on my ignore list, I don't have one. I don't always agree with everyone on every subject. But I am here to learn and teach.

I have never experienced a dust problem when using my Dillon separator.I use corn cob media and dump the tumbler into the separator, a few turns of the hands and their done. Never any dust like in the video. Maybe you should change your media out for some fresh media.

Likewise. Use the Dillion with corn cob and a squirt of new finish. Never any dust.

May buy another one for wet tumbling, all though I’d
prefer a design like the Hornady. Just wish it was more sturdy

I do use Oneshot metal polish in my tumbler as well. I'm guessing that adds to my lack of dust.

I will say since my reloading room is in my attic, it is a major reason I chose a wet/sealed tumbling system like the Thumler's tumbler even though I don't wet tumble. Leaving brass out to dry is a good way to find my cats batting brass around the place, and then they learn that dad's reloading stuff is fun to play with, so I've never wanted to wet tumble. I also have hard water in my home and don't want mineral deposits all over my brass.

More importantly, I don't want lead in my blood or in my 9 lb cats' blood streams. My setup has a lot of potential danger if done carelessly or improperly. I vacuum frequently also.

OK, so other than being red, is it better than the RCBS unit? The RCBS is the best reloading tool I have bought in a long time. It saves a me ton of time on 223 brass. Should I have bought the Hornady? Why?

Three things, in my opinion, are better than the RCBS
1. The base is more stable.
2. The clamshell locks in position for easy loading.
3. The mesh screen for stainless pins.
Now if I liked green would those features be a deal breaker? NOPE. With the RCBS if you find the right 5 gal bucket to set the separator in it is quite stable. You can run a bungee cord across the clamshell to make it solid. And you could use a large paint strainer for your pins.

I usually use crushed corncob media. I always add two or three table spoons of mineral spirits to my Lyman 1200 tumbler. Every other time I add a cap full of Nu Finish polymer polish. I don't see any meaningful amount of dust in either the tumbler bowl or in my Dillon case separator.

I have a reason to be more concerned than most about lead. I have a 7-year-old grandson who has been coming to my reloading room since he was 3. Now, my daughter is concerned about lead so my grandson and I have made a deal with her. If his lead level rises he is out of the reloading room. As my grandson says he lets some "stab" him twice a year and I pay for the blood test.

Not only do we control the dust to the best of our ability we also wash our hands and face at least once an hour. I don't know if you all have noticed when there is a flu outbreak in a school the kids drop like flies but the teachers never get sick. That is because the kids can not help touching their faces.

Oh, I do use corn cob and an additive and I change it once a month.

Go outside with that new unused media. Pour it from one container down a couple of feet to another container and let the breeze, or fan, blow away all the dust before you start using it.
Good idea I didn't think of that. Thanks.

@DRAINSMITH

I ordered one. If it’s crap it will be your fault, hahah!
If it's crap just buy a can of blue spray paint and you will love it.
Just when you get it do a full review. If you disagree with my assessment just don't call me stupid. Oh, the hell with it, even if you agree with me you can call me stupid. I just couldn't help taking a dig. I wish every one were like us "pick needle and prod" but still get along.

After not needing to clean any cases for awhile, I finally used my seperator. Works great! It will hold and function with ten pounds of pins and two hundred cases. My hands are no longer in scalding hot water and every pin is removed. I love it!
Since my loads are quite heavy I am gentle with it. As I am with everything. But it is quality built and should last for many years. I now have a place to dry out my pins, too!
