I am looking for a beam scale, my hornady work good until u trickle powder then it losses its accuracy. i have seen it over 1 grain in only 20 case fills. my LGS have a nice old rcbs 10-10 it looks all there, the cover is still clear. i asked the owner about it because he was asking 100 for it., he told me he would do $75. seems ok deal to me.

I was thinking of just getting a lee beam, but they only go up to 100 grains ( i think ). that's more then i need for powder since i don't have my 300 rum no more. just checking see if u guys think that a deal or not. thank. troy.

I looked at completed prices on Ebay. Seventy five dollars is mid range price for one of these.

Let me recommend a Redding #2. Been using this for at least twenty years, brought it out because my digital scale has fits in the cold.

I do have a Lee beam. Adjustments are crude, particularly the tenth's of a grain. Major adjustments are with a ball, you have to take the beam off to adjust that, then you have to rebalance. The Lee is a deal for the money, but it is un refined and combersome.

I got my 10-10 new and I like. Adjustment are accurate, the knob you turn to adjust (level) should have weight inside 500gr and you put that in pan and that gets it level. I got set of Lyman weight and I check say 51.5gr and scale is level.

I used an RCBS 5-0-5 for a long time and I like it but when I bought a 10-10 I really liked it. It's easy to use and always accurate. If it's in good condition $75 is more than a fair price. The last price I was new in Midway was $160. Amazon has the original Ohaus model 10-10 for $120 right now.

RCBS is no longer selling the scales made by Ohaus so no more 5-0-2, 5-0-5 or 10-10 scales, only the newer "M" scales like the M500. If you want one the prices will only be going up on used ones as they dry up IMO.

I like the 10-10 goes to 1010 grains i bow hunt and I can say the heavy arrows on it. I think the new ohaus are made in china. Don't know how they are. I met a man at sarco Inc last year that works for ohaus i should have asked the scale he used.

Bring a set of check weights to the shop, check the scale and buy it. That's my opinion.

The best scale you can buy. . . is a used Redding #2 beam scale. ebay should yield a couple for ~$35. You cannot buy better.

I have owned beam scales in every color. I currently own 4 Redding's, and no others. I just keep finding them for chump change. . .

I threw my Lee balance beam scale away because it was a piece of junk. It would weigh powder but it was a PITA and cheesy cheap.

My first BB scale was an RCBS 10-10. bought 30+ years ago and still working as it did new.
I saw on a post that Amazon has the Ohaus 10-10 and may just buy a new one, ya know, just in case.

I would agree, when I accidentally broke my old RCBS 505 I replaced it with a Redding #2 and it has been great for many years now.

60 Gr XTP. Pretty dang close. Go Hornady.

That would be my first choice if i didnt already have an old tan colored Ohaus 10-10, before they were labeled w RCBS. Only issue I have ever had with Redding was with a sizing Die in 444 Marlin. They replaced it promptly!

I also like the Redding #2.

It seems like I did some serious research on these beam scales when I bought my mine back in the mid nineties and the Redding was the one that was recommended highest.

My “research” back then probably involved one Handloader magazine though so who knows

I think the 10-10 would be fine too.

If he will let you check it out, do so. Check the knife edges on the pivots, both on the beam and for the pan. If it checks out, it's a great deal. I bought one second hand, it looked like it had hot wax spilled on it. It took a lot of cleaning, but it works great.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

75 is a good deal as long as it is all there and the agate bearings(the little V block stones the pivot edge rides on) are good.
Ohaus doesn't make them anymore, someone/some company in china obtained the casting rights(or not) and is making 10-10s, but they aren't the real deal. You won't find it on the Ohaus website.

There are plenty of scales on ebay all the time, if you miss one another will be up in a day or two, so patience pays off.
I got my 10-10 on ebay for that price range, and my old Lyman M5 which is also a sweet scale

The little Lee works, and might even be more accurate, but being small and fiddly makes it frustrating to use.
I started with one, and the day I bought a full size beam and was sure it was on the way I smashed that little thing in the parking lot. Big fan of Lee, but that scale is for the birds.

well i got a rcbs 10-10 but not the one from the store. yesterday my dads friend brendon call me and asked if i had any 450 marlin brass. i gave him the 50 or 60 i had,( i wont use them, i would do a 458 american before a 450m). he axed what i wonted for them and i told him not to worry about it. he came by today with a bag, after he left i opened it, inside was a rcbs 10-10 with almost all the pieces.

It is missing the clear plastic cover, no biggy. and its missing the pan, my hornady pan fits fine. i added some lead shot and i am now fine tuning it.the scale is one of the green hammered finished one, it maybe from 2002 from the numbers on the bottom. i think i saw that the ones this color are the mexico made ones but for the price i don't much care. thanks everyone for the tips, one day i will get a better scale. But money is tight right now and this one will do.

I personally feel you don't need a "better" scale, you already have one. When funds open up buy the missing parts and you will be set for life, IMO.

That was a very generous gift for what your dad's friend got. You are lucky.
