I have a chance to buy this rifle. Its a custom built 308 on a Mauser action. It has a 26" stainless heavy barrel he said something about vz24. Don't know much about it. I can get it for about 600. What do you think

Like others have said, unless it's a beautiful work of art that you can't live without, I'd pass.

I recently picked up a sporterized 1914 Mauser in 30-06 for a whopping $150 off FunBroker. The Fajen stock and Lyman peep on it were worth that much.

Czech BRNO VZ-24... last I checked, those weren't real expensive, but prices seem to climb on everything. I wonder about the barrel which may or may not be half the money.

A little more information. VZ24 in 308 26"1in 10 twist heavy straight taper barrel. Timney featherweight trigger. Farrell scope mount. Bell & Carlson tactical medalists stock. Custom bent bolt handle. I personally don't like the stock and would change it.
Starting to look better, I still think it's to high. What barrel maker and what is the round count, can you get pictures. I would look over the scion good, at the bolt face the work done to sportersize it. Even check the bridge to see if it was broken and fixed. If you get it I maybe interested in the stock.

Does it still have the stripper clip slot, or was it milled out before D&T for the scope mount? For some reason, it seems a good many smiths who sporterized Mausers thought you had to mill out the clip slot because... well, just 'cause... well, because you just have to!!! Not really necessary, but it's more work to charge for, even though scope bases are made to fit regardless.

i happen to lie the clip hump tho my custom argentine was removed, mostly for two piece bases. her it is with a one piece leupold for a non ground action.

If you want a Mauser, the asking price may not be high if a good one. You wont build one cheaper. A Mauser action will cost you 200-250 these days, a good barrel is another 200, cheap one can be had at around 100, stock is 120-200.Add a commercial safety and trigger is another cost. I built my mausers on $80 rifles or receiver actions, but now a bolt cost that much or even more. Zastava commercial mausers can be found at $400 couple years ago but not heavy barrel. By the way VZ24 is good receiver, I have a Mauser built on VZ24 action. It was built many years ago and total cost was under $300, not these days.

I'd see if they would haggle...let you shoot it to see if its worth the coin.
sounds like, at least with the list of goodies on it, worth 450-550...and the stock you can pull and put on for auction to help pay for the stock you want.
