Another "Double Deuce."

With a little assist from my wife, who actually spotted it in the back of the case, I picked up this Smith and Wesson, five screw, K-22 Combat Masterpiece, in nickel a couple of days ago. It was marked at $399.99, and when I asked "What's the best you can do?" I was surprised when the answer came back at $350.00. Well, I figured I'd better grab it before they changed their minds.

It was all kinds of funky when I got it. Nickel was all milky and dirty, a few small spots of rust, but nothing major. All the mechanicals checked out. The stocks were aftermarket Safariland's but that didn't bother me too much.

The jury is still out on rather the nickel is original or a refinish, but if it's a refinish, it's well done, and I'm too cheap to order a "letter."





It was pretty funky looking when I got it, with "patina" giving the nickel a rather cloudy/milky look, but a little time with some Flitz and Ren Wax pretty much took care of it.

From the pictures it does not appear to be a refinish, but where is the S&W Logo? Is it covered by the grips? If it was a refinish, it appears to be a really nice job and at $350, who cares as long as it doesn't peel off! The S&W .22 Revolvers have always surprised me at how accurate they are from the 2" to the 8". I would buy 10 of them for what you paid. Great find and I hope you took care of mama for the assist. Nothing in this world better than a good woman unless its a good woman that supports he man when it comes to gun purchases

That's the one thing that makes me say it's a refinish. The S&W logo doesn't look "right." It's sort of washed out just a bit. (It is covered by the grip.) Rather that's from the grips rubbing on it for years, or what, it's not good enough for me to not call it a refinish. The trigger, hammer, and ejector rod have not been refinished. Frame, cylinder, and barrel have matching numbers.

But for $350, I don't really care. It's a nice K-22 to go with the blue 1954 22 Combat Masterpiece I've already got.

I've already been offered about 50% more than I paid for it.

Kudos to your wife for spotting it in the display case! Great find; don't think I have ever seen one nickel plated before. Good job cleaning it up with Flitz. I use it on my nickel plated Colt Combat Commander.

Another reason I'm reluctant to say it's original. According to SCSW 4, a nickel 22 CM from that era is "scarce" and I'm too cheap to spring for a letter.

I use Flitz on all my guns, unless they have a really nice blue finish. Old funky blue guns get the treatment too. You'd be surprised how much microscopic rust, dust, and just plain "crud" come off a gun. I've never seen any indication that it will damage the finish, but I work slow, lightly, and by hand. It's not something you should have to repeat anyway if you keep them waxed or oiled or whatever you do to protect a finish. (I like Ren Wax obviously.)
