if you had $1000, what bolt action rifle would you buy

Ruger American Rifle. Synthetic stock 7.62x39 it’s not winning any long ranger competitions. But it’s accurate enough for me. Plus I’d buy a handful of twenty rounders to feed it and my mini thirty. Then I’d swap my scope to the bolt gun. Leaving the ranch rifle with it’s ghost rings for a bit. I am trying to mostly keep to one rifle caliber so it’s not a debate for even the least gun experienced person in the family to know which crate to grab to feed a rifle.

I have two brand new (I’m differentiating from former Winchester) Miroku Winchesters. One is in a beautiful Maple stock and shoots .308. But alas....I’m in Ohio, so a deer gun it is not. The other is a deer gun, though. It’s .44 mag lever gun. Maybe blasphemy to some, but I find the Mirokus to be heads and shoulders better quality than anything Winchester turned out from about 2000 on.

I would buy a lefty, so that limits my choices a great deal.

I don’t own a Browning rifle, so probably some flavor of those. I have a Ruger, Savage, Remington, Winchester and even a Zastqva 98 Mauser in left hand, but not a Browning.

I had this same dilemma one year ago and personally was drawn towards the classic polished blued steel and wood. Ended up getting a new BAR MKII Safari in .30-06 and it is sweet. Real soft shooter for a .30-06. Thing is a pig though with a scope on it. Just traded for a like new tang safety M77 .270 this morning which also has a wood stock and polished blued steel. Just can't quit that classic look. Only synthetic stuff I own is my AR and a Winchester pump. Listen to your heart, friend.

I would get a Winchester model 70 featherweight compact in 7mm-08 again. Gave mine to my son-in-law. Topped with a Leupold 2x7 compact scope and it was great to carry and shoot.

Well personally I would likely look for a nice old Remington 700 VSSF chambered in 308 Winchester. Why? Because I still have all my Remington tools for working on and accurizing those guns. If I wanted to reach out a little further I might consider the 7mm Rem Mag cartridge. I have a 7mm Rem Mag in a Ruger and while it is a great hunting rifle it lacks a heavy barrel.

I would also hope that just before I spent the money that nothing like plumbing failures would take precedence over a rifle buy. :) Again, Remington 700 only because I have all the tools to support them. :)
