I have a sight that I cannot identify. I know the collective wisdom here can figure out what I have. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

If I'm not mistaken, it's an old Lyman reciever mounted peep sight.

At least, that's their old logo. If you contact them they might be able to identify the model/ what it goes on.

They're very good sights.

Yes a Lyman receiver. Check the peep hole and see if it’s threaded. My version had a larger knurled peep that screwed into that.

Thanks for the replies!
The peep hole is threaded.
It is a well made sight in very good condition.
All it needs is a good wipe down with some oil.

How would a knob screwed into the peep sight be useful?
Also, I don't have a base. I found this with some parts I bought.
Is this worth listing for sale somewhere?

There are different apertures available to screw in, with different diameters. Smaller diameter knurled apertures with larger holes are for hunting and plinking. Larger diameter screw-in apertures with smaller holes are for target shooting. Check out availability on the internet from suppliers like Brownells.

The problem is not finding apertures, but finding a base that will attach to your rifle. I haven't seen them for sale without the piece you have and they're made to fit particular rifles or receiver diameters, etc.

Not a knob, a peep aperture screwed into the threaded hole to sharpen focus.

It IS a Lyman #48, as has been noted. Does it have a code stamped to the inside by the elevation screw? If it says "WJS", it goes to Winchester models 54 and 70 as well as Remington models 721, 722. Later iterations will also include Remington models 725 and 700. Also fits Savage 110. There are different bases marked #48 WJS over the production run, the later bases requiring less stock inletting. I've heard the #48 series was discontinued in the mid-1960's.

As previously advised, it is a #48 Lyman. Once a very popular receiver sight for hunting and target rifles. They were made for generations and must have sold in the tens of thousands. Here is one mount on one of my '03 Match rifles... DSC00160.JPG

I had a Lyman 48 installed on my then new Remmy 700. What a setup it was. Sadly I had to sell it when I needed funds. I bought the rifle and the sight in 1967. The rifle was $129.95 & the sight was $50. (quite a sum of money back then).

Wow, you guys are amazing. I knew I'd get an answer here.
There is a D34 stamped underneath. Does that mean anything?

@offhand shows a Lyman 48S, which has the slide on the right, but this WJS, for a M70, the slide is on the left

Your slide is a lefty. The base is probably still attached to the rifle. I occasionally see rifles that had these 48 and were scoped. Typically the slide was removed and kept close in case the scope went down. Looking at my Mauser pictures, your slide was not for a 48M, those have the slide on the right.

I'd say the original base, maybe floating around somewhere [or still attached to a rifle like Slamfire observed], has a D34 stamped in the recess where your top end is supposed to ride.

+1

Bases were serialized to the slide.

"Short base" Lyman 48....
If anyone has a long-base (right side mount) 48C to sell - I would LOVE to buy it!

Todd.
