Have so much fun shooting my 8 3/8” Mod 17 that I started a quest for a Mod 48 in 22 Mag. Seems the long tubes are much harder to come by than the 4 and 6” and of course when you find one on GB the asking price is ridiculous. Patience paid off. My LGS owner found me one and we were able to do some trading and I’m in this one fairly reasonable. Was really just looking for a shooter, but for a few bucks more I wound up getting one that I’m positive has not been fired since leaving the factory. Yes, it has a slight turn line but whether is new, like new or excellent condition, it will get the snot shot out of it next trip to the range. I think it will be a hoot shooting 50-100 yards. 6D51FF40-2AC3-44D0-AEE4-C0D5B9740555.jpeg

I used to have decided preferences for which Smith & Wesson I wanted. Somewhere down the line I seem to have lost that. Any Smith & Wesson from that era or earlier is beautiful.

They have a double action pull that just wants to be stroked. One of those in hand and the world just seems to be a little more right.

Well said, and I agree. Anything from about 1900 to about 1975, I'm interested, even with obsolete cartridges. The guys that were doing the shaping and fitting might as well have been jewelers. Sometimes I like to pull an old one out of the safe just so I can admire the sideplate seam.

Sweet! Love that long barrel! Had a Model 48 with a 4" barrel years ago. I should say I had it briefly as I seem to recall trading it in on a mint Colt New Frontier .22 with the extra .22 Magnum cylinder not that long after getting it.

Now THAT is what I call a S&W Classic! Outstanding looking Smith, congratulations on having the patience to wait until you found exactly what you wanted.

Stay safe.

Still in pristine condition with the original box. Paid too high a price for it at the time...$325.00. Wish I had grabbed up every model 14 and K38 I could have gotten my hands on back then. Good ones are running in the $600 to $800 range today on GB. I’ve got four of them. The 8 & 3/8” plus three 6”. One of the 6” guns is single action only...factory single action and not one where someone took the sear off the front of the hammer. I can remember turning up my nose at some K32 guns because 32 long was just not popular and “ who would want one when they could have a K38...” Still kick myself over those decisions!
