"Hole in the Ear Buck"

Neighboring hunters drove a dozen deer towards us some years ago. Through the binoculars I could see a buck with red all over his head, one of my boys brought him down.

Appears other hunters had pierced his ear with a slug and blew a chunk of the antler away. The ear piercing splattered the head with blood and antler remained intact.

When he came in I knew he was a mature deer and looked to be a normal rack until I walked up on him. On that same side of the goofy tine there was a large rip in the main beam about 3-4” wide that we are sure was a drop tine that was ripped off. In the first pic you can see the bulge on the left side of the main beam.

This buck was taken just a bit over a mile from my house this Fall during archery season. I think it had 56 points total. View attachment 880382

That looks like a cactus buck. They generally have something wrong with their testicles to cause it. Low or no testosterone causes the antlers to stay in velvet and small injuries or insect bites cause all the small crazy points.

Here's one that's similar.

Shot this one about six years ago.
Making a one man drive to my huntin' buddy came upon a set of fresh tracks so started following them. He stood up out of his bed and I put him back to sleep in his bed at 25 yards.
Thought that I was the most stealthy hunter in the woods, then got hearing aids.o_O

He has 16 points over an inch long, a couple on the back side of his antlers that are not seen in this picture.
Got the buck home, the wife was thrilled, not only for the venison but it was one that the game camera had captured with him having one more tine that was broke off.....
