Well I had the itch recently to get into Sass and Fastdraw and have been haunting the local shops for suitable candidates. One of them has a fondness for single actions. After stopping in and thinking about a couple of choices he stops and says “Oh wait I got just the thing for you.”

Few seconds later he comes out of the back with these: 08AFF0B0-B97E-4302-8DF9-08272A0B0A65.jpeg

Pair of Ruger New Vaqueros in .357. He says they’re from a former cowboy shooter and he’d had the works done to them. Half cock hammer and trigger, polished chambers, spring kits, free spin cylinders the whole 9 yards.

Then proceeded to give me a deal because the one has a bad hand and locks up sometimes. Least to say I couldn’t get the money out fast enough. A new hand is 9 bucks and some time with a file and stones, I’d say I made out alright. A sacrifice of a Ruger lcrx and 550 bucks and I was out the door.

yes, you made out real well on that deal.

nice pair of pistols,

murf

At the gun shop where I bought a lot of guns when I lived in Tennessee one of the counter guys knew what I liked and made it a point to bring out something I had the hots for when ever I came into the shop. He sold a bunch of guns to me that way. Excellent buy on those guns.

Congrats on your pair of ready to go pistols, except for that hand. The cool thing is not only the money you saved, but the the downtime of not having those guns to shoot.

@Dustbowl
Nice job. Good deal. Please know that if you send the revolver with the bad hand into Ruger they will fix it but they will swap any aftermarket springs or parts with factory parts. They do not return the parts they remove. At least they didn’t with Wolff springs they removed from my two Vaqueros that I sent in recently.

You will really enjoy those shooters. And Welcome to Cowboy Action Shooting :D:cool:

Howdy

Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) as promoted by the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS) and Cowboy Fastdraw are very different.

Cowboy Fastdraw uses wax bullets only propelled by a primer.

CAS uses real lead bullets, propelled by real powder.

A wax bullet would probably hurt if it hit you, but it would not kill you.

A lead bullet propelled by gunpowder will kill someone. Even the relatively light loads used by many CAS shooters are still lethal.

Here is a quick video showing Cowboy Fastdraw. Notice the posture most of the shooters assume. Most stand hunched back with their hips thrust forward to help clear leather sooner. And almost all are shooting from the hip. Meaning they don't raise the gun up so they can see the sights. They are shooting by instinct from the hip. Notice the shooters stand in one position and fire one shot when the timer starts.

As far as I know, shooting from the hip is not outlawed in CAS, we even had a few stages that required it a lot of years ago. But pretty much everybody agreed that with real bullets shooting from the hip was a bad idea. No telling when a round might go over the berm. I have not seen anybody shooting from the hip in CAS for many years.

Also, in Cowboy Fastdraw you just need one pistol. You need two in CAS, and you need a rifle and a shot gun too.

There is usually lots of motion in CAS, moving from one position to another and shooting different guns from different positions.

Here is a video of my friend Wild Bill Blackerby shooting a stage in CAS. Wild Bill shoots Black Powder, most CAS shooters do not. And you will notice Wild Bill saunters from position to position. Most serious CAS shooters run, or at least they walk fast.

And oh yeah, you have to use 45s in Cowboy Fastdraw.

Even if you never compete with those guns you got a smokin' deal. My bud just sold his Vaquero in 357 for $450. And that was a bone stock gun with no upgrades. I think you did very well.

Well I’ve already got a suitable rifle and shotgun. But I figured for the price I could get into CAS at least. The local Fastdraw club in my area allows 38 special with a large rifle primer and wax bullet for practice and local matches. So if I do decide to take it to the next level I will get a 45 for fast draw. I’ve already researched both and am excited to get into them.

That would have been a done deal for me as well! Enjoy them and let us know how things go if you decide to get into CAS and fast draw competitions.

My older Vaquero is one fun shooting single action and very accurate with both factory ammo and handloads.

Congrats pard
You are good to go get a good shotgun, a reliable lever rifle.
Please, post pics of your outfit, go people all around.
Great game, very under rated.

You got too good a deal on them so you should return them, either that or give the dealer more money! yuk, yuk, yuk!

Well for sure figured out the problem on the “bad” one. The previous owner took too much off the pawl when he made the free spin modification and the top step of the pawl lets go too soon causing the bottom step to hit the side of the ratchet causing it to lock up.

When cocking fast it has enough momentum to carry past the lower step but when slow cocking it’ll hang up. Pics show light damage to ratchet and rounded pawl. Already have new pawls inbound and have stoned the burrs from the damage. Gonna make shooters outta these guns yet.
