OK, so I've already done one conversion. Converted a 30 carbine to 9mm Magnum as a companion gun for my AutoMag III.
Now I'm looking at converting one to 22TCM as a companion gun for my 22TCM 1911.
Lastly I'm working on a Bullpen stock for the M1 Carbine.

Original GI Carbines? Commercial Clones?

The 9x29 Winchester Magnum runs at a greater PSI than the spec for the .30 Carbine. The M1 Cabine gas system was designed to operate at 38500 psi while the 9x29 allows up to 45000 psi. Wondering if you overbored the new barrel, adjusted the gas system or simply are using it as a single shot?

The original carbine round spec should have been for a 9mm bullet.
The biggest complaint about 30 carbine has always been its only 30cal.

The Newnited States didn't do no stinkin 9 sillymeter in 1942.

The .30 is a distant relative of the .32 WSL.
One can imagine a .35 or .351 WSL fudged to standard .35 caliber for the job.
The .345 Burton of 1919 WAS a .351 with a spitzer bullet, but the gun was a full size (10 lb) rifle.
Might have been a kicker in a carbine, the 1907 Winchester is compact but heavy with its blowback counterweight.

The .22 Spitfire (5.7x33) was sometimes problematic, but overall a good conversion. A 50-grain bullet at 2700 fps was effective...

.
Had a chance to buy an M1 converted to Johnson's .22 Spitfire cheap. I passed as the AR is a better platform for that sort of round anyway. From the reviews, it wasn't that accurate, took special dies etc. and M1's can have issues with ammo and magazines alone--conversions add just one more complication.
