Ship dates for three letter prefixes are difficult to determine. Looking in the Catalog of S&W, the AUD prefix isn’t shown. The AUC prefix appears in 1986 and 1987. From this we can deduce that AUD first appeared in 1987. Since your revolver has a low AUD serial number (0561), 1987 seems like the likely date of shipment. This is my best guess based on the information that I have.

Excellent, thanks guys. I should have added the pin is on the hammer, but there is no pin in the barrel. No pin Ed barrels after 79-81-ish depending on diff models iirc so that time matches up. Grabbed it cheap and plan a polish and load testing first off. I’m really curious as to the Underwood/Buffalo Bore
Diff combos; Keith bone buster hardcast round, Penetrator all copper screwdriver tips, etc. As an aside, It’s just an unreal time to live in this advanced age of dependability, efficiency and top-shelf variety of the advanced, smaller caliber loads! I mean it’s just gel; but as exampled we now even have a round you can get 16” penetration and .38 performance from a .380 . That’s crazy town lunacy just a few years back. A .38 with 1200+ consistent velocity bringing up a new term, the .357 light/special/short or whatever; it’s a fine time indeed and especially for those that remember a choice of 3, and the FBI loaf was the hottest thing going!

I really like my 64-3. It was made in 81, last of the pinned barrels. They are great shooters
