I'm using these 198g warner flatline bullets in 300nm. they did the courtesy of sharing quickload calc which i've linked above

I started with berger hybrid target 230g and 84g of H1000 and walked it up to 86.5, where i got pressure and stopped. that was 3045, 3043, 3048, 3028, 3035 fps.

I also shot 86.0g and got 3010, 3010, 3010, 3008 fps, which is dang good imho.

but again, i want to work up a load for the warner flatline. I bought a pound of R25 and R26. Based on quickload, i'm going to start with R25. quickload says max load (i assume) is 86.41g, which should give 3204 fps.

I don't want to run hot loads, but i do want to find a node as close to max as I can. Almost all my experience is with cartridges in the 37-47g weight, so i'm soliciting suggestions on starting charge and what increments to go up, to find nodes.

would you really start 10% down at 77.77g? maybe 78.00g and go up in half grain increments? third grain increments? whole grain increments til i find pressure and back down in third grain to find a node?
 
(btw, for those curious about the ballistics... at 2000' DA, 3200 fps, those bullets go 2495 yards before going subsonic, which is a 4.095 second TOF. my dope at 1000 yards is only 5.1 mils and they're still going 2161 fps. at a mile, they still have over 1000 ft-lb energy. by way of comparison, a 308win FGMM 168g SMK has the same energy at 555yards and needs 11.8 mils to a grand.)
 
I know only of 1 person who has a 300 Win Mag. He very seldom shoots it due to recoil. He does hand load for it using IMR4350 I think. Don't know what weight bullet he's using.
 
I have a heap of 300 NM once fired brass (that I shot) I tried to sell it awhile ago with zero luck, here or other places. There seems to be little interest in the cartridge in general. Even the military is reevaluating it despite it being the intermediate cartridge for the ASR system. The 300PRC appears to be outperforming it for that application.

I personally didn't like the cartridge enough to keep it and thus never got around to reloading for it. I rarely get to shoot far enough to really take advantage of its ballistics and I don't hunt anything that need this much killing. Target shooting beyond 600 yards my 6mm CM suffices and is easier on the shoulder.
 
Kinda surprised nobody has opinion on working up loads with magnums. Is this rare?
A buddy of mine and i were playing in the mental mud with some of the 30 magnums, and the 300norma got looked at for a hot minute. Alas his donor action is a standard belted mag, and he doesn't want to do more than spin a barrel on, so that's as far as that went.

Anyway the largest magnums I've worked with are my .375 and a 7mm stw. I generally gather all the bits of data i need to make quickloads as accurate as possible, then drop the SAFE max given by 10-15% and work up (shooting over a Chrono) till I hit pressure, using 1gr increments. At that point I call a grain of two low my working ceiling and hope I got good Chrono data somewhere in there to use as an accuracy starting point.
If everything is input correctly, I've found QLs guess to be pretty bloody close. You REALLY need to watch case capacity tho.
Somewhere in that 10-15% window dosent show consistent velocity, I'll dump that bullet or powder.

I also like to start with the slowest useable powder available, with upto 105% fill ratio. That gives an idea of where you'll be, while also making it harder to blow yourself up.
If you don't mind a suggestion, I'd take a hard look at retumbo. I think your at the bore ratio with that round that it should be right about perfect for it.

Well I finally got out and shot today.

results were very disappointing. After shooting the last of my h1000 with Berger 230g hybrids (very accurate and no misses on steel from 300-900 yards) I cleaned the crap out of it since I was switching powders. And started on my new loads.

all loads are new norma brass.

Warner flatline bullets 198g

I started at 84g and went to 85 then 86. That’s half a grain shy of quick load max.

No ejector marks anywhere. No flattening at all of the primers. No heavy bolt lift.

Below lists the powder, velocity, and the before and after measurement of the case web.

I only loaded 5 rounds. Just making sure the gun didn’t blow up. Looking for pressure signs.

so basically at 84g there was no expansion. At 85g there was a thou. And at 86g there was 1.5 thou

so at 86.5g quick load says I should be 150-170fps faster. So that’s disappointing.

also, the target was about 2.5” group.

Maybe I was just having a bad day.

today I shot two warm up shots and 2 groups of 3. Total of 8 rounds. Once fired brass. Both groups were 1/2”. But velocity variance still sucks.

Again quick load said I should be at 3200fps at 86.5g and I’m about 3100fps at 87.0g and working up in half grain increments. Nowhere close to pressure at all
 
one thing i've found a little odd is quickload claims 86.4g of R25 is 99% fill. I just loaded 88, and 89 grains and there's still plenty of room. enough to hear and feel the powder moving when i shake it.

Have you measured the case volume of you cases against what is in Quickloads? I have run into several cartridges where QL is way off what I measure in the actual cartridges I am using. If your cases you are using have more volume than QL is using that could explain why you getting a lower velocity than QL is predicting.
