I've been working up a 405gr RCBS FN-GC bullet with H322.

Lyman tops out at 48.5gr at 27,100 CUP. 1740fps from a 24" barrel.

John Taffin runs the same bullet (I think) with 52.0gr. I guess this based on the idea that modern lever actions can handle 40K psi loads. I'm not that brave.

I assumed my load of 49.0gr would clock around 1600-1650fps from an 18.5" barrel. Boy was I wrong.

10 shots, 15 feet from unit, approx 60 deg.

1801, 1823, 1849, 1841, 1844
1826, 1836, 1828, 1841, 1811
High: 1849
Low: 1801
Average: 1830
E.S. : 48
S.D. : 15

Then I decided to use the last 10 for a very lazy accuracy test, and ring some steel. But after I hung the 4" gong and retreated 70 yards or so to my shooting position, I thought maybe it fell down before I got back. It took the 4x magnification of my range finder, and a good look to solidify in my mind where the steel was is reference to the burned trees. I really need to paint that thing.

I only hit it once. I need to stop expecting so much of myself from field positions. But I did some major damage to the two trees in line behind the target.

The amazing thing though, was when I did connect with it that one time. I had the target hung with paracord, and the whole rig spun around a good half a dozen times. It made a good dent in the AR500. And somehow the coating on the quick links got removed and deposited on the cord itself. Amazing.

Certainly powerful enough for the bear load I intended. Though I may just have to go to a 100 yard range to confirm accuracy.

Crimeny, those loads pack a punch

It'll work for what you need it for, there isn't much on the planet that'll stand up to a load like that. Going to back it down some?

It got the best accuracy at 49.0gr. Though they were only 5 shot groups, and heavily dependent on me not sucking.

That was at 25 yards. 4 shots in 7/8" and 1 flier. I don't get much better with iron sights.

47.0gr wasn't bad, but not as good as that. 48.0 and 48.5gr were bigger. I was looking around, and it seems like between 49.0 and 50.0gr has been a sweet spot with this bullet for some people.

I really don't mind the recoil of these too much. Buffalo Bore Magnum loads, on the other hand, are more than I'm comfortable with.

I put the data into the JBM ballistic calculator. Based on 1830fps and hitting 1" high at 25 yards. That looks to give me a mid height of just about 3" at 80-90 yards, and zero at 150 yards. I guess I'll have to go shoot some paper and see how true that is.

I might even lug the 12" steel gong and stand out. See if I can actually hit that.

The 45-70 is like that proverbial slow moving freight train. It'll move you iffin it connects with you! That load will take the fight out of about anything it hits. I use mine with iron sights as 50 YDS is stretching it where I hunt. One year I will take a whitetail with that round just so I can say I did. I also want to do it with my 44 CAL 1851 Remington revolver as well.

One or two shot hunting is the only place I see for 2000fps rounds. Shoot a 40 round match with sighters and I might need a wambulance to take me to the hospital. Your way more tuff than I shooting 25 of those in testing.

I actually only shot 20 that time. The accuracy test was the day before. But I'd have kept shooting if I had more ammo. And probably regretted it. Too much fun, despite the kick.

Of course, I have a big squishy limbsaver recoil pad on that rifle (rather than the slice of tractor tire Henry sent it out with). That helps a lot!
